The president who assailed every piece of President Bush’s foreign policy, even questioning military tactics, is out telling Mitt Romney not to do criticize him on foreign policy. And he is doing so from foreign soil.
LOS CABOS, Mexico — President Barack Obama says Mitt Romney’s campaign advisers should quit criticizing him on foreign policy — especially since they don’t know what they’re talking about.
During a brief news conference Tuesday night to wrap up the two-day G-20 conference with world leaders here, the president rebuffed a mention of an op-ed last month published in Handelsblatt, Germany’s leading business newspaper, by Romney economic adviser R. Glenn Hubbard.
There’s a history of not letting domestic politics intercede in international conversations, Obama argued.
“I would point out that we have one president at a time and one administration at a time,” Obama said. “And I think traditionally the notion has been that America’s political differences end at the water’s edge.”
As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama was a serial violator of that tradition. For instance, here he is in 2007 saying that the Iraq surge will not work, and will make things worse.
