Obama to Congress: Have Some Hoagies and Swallow My 'To-Do List'

President Obama attempted to woo congressional leaders to carry out his Post-It “to-do list” with free hoagies today.

Obama began the day at a roundtable with small-business owners at a restaurant in Washington.

“We’ll see if Congress is willing to act,” Obama said of his small-business tax relief push. “I’m going to offer them some hoagies,” he said of his lunchtime meeting with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

The White House confirmed for the press pool that, indeed, Obama picked up hoagies for the leaders. For himself, Obama ordered roast turkey, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and sharp provolone. It’s not known if he downgraded to PB&J for the members of Congress.

“We’ve put together a handy ‘to-do’ list; it’s very short,” Obama said at the roundtable. “I’ve been talking about it over the last couple of weeks.”

The list hasn’t been popular with the GOP. Last week, Boehner called his presidency as small as the faux Post-It note bearing said list for lawmakers.

“So my message to Congress — and I’m going to have a chance to see the congressional leadership when I get back to the White House — I’m going to offer them some hoagies while they’re there — is let’s go ahead and act to help build and sustain momentum for our economy,” Obama told reporters. “There will be more than enough time for us to campaign and politick, but let’s make sure that we don’t lose steam at a time when a lot of folks like these are feeling pretty optimistic and are ready to go.”

“It seems that one of the items missing from President Obama’s ‘To do’ list is for Senate Democrats to produce a budget,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) noted today.
