Carney: Obama Might Not Know He's Gay Yet

White House press secretary Jay Carney said aboard Air Force One a short time ago that he didn’t know if President Obama was aware of the Newsweek cover declaring him “the first gay president.”

“I don’t know if he’s seen it and I haven’t spoken to him about it,” Carney said of the rainbow-halo cover making the web rounds over the weekend. The May 21 issue is available on newsstands today.

“I haven’t read the story yet but I certainly saw his powerful and incredibly moving blog post last week in the wake of the president’s interview with Robin Roberts,” Carney said of the cover piece’s author, Andrew Sullivan.

“His firm commitment to the rights of all Americans and rights of gay and lesbian Americans are reflected in the support he has in the community,” the spokesman continued, according to the White House pool reporter. “That commitment has been incredibly strong since Day One when he became president.”

Obama and his crew headed up to New York today for the president’s Barnard commencement speech, a taping of “The View,” and two campaign fundraisers.
