Biden Blames the US for Being the 'Problem' With Iran (Update: Romney Camp Responds)

Speaking to a Jewish group earlier today, Vice President Joe Biden created a mess that the Obama campaign will spend a few days attempting to clean up:

BIDEN: When we took office, let me remind, there was virtually no international pressure on Iran. We were the problem. We were diplomatically isolated in the world, in the region, in Europe.

By “we,” Biden means “Bush” but he managed to word it so stupidly that he blames America first. The reality was that, then as now, the United States was working closely with allies Britain and France, and the Russians and Chinese played games while the Iranians continued their drive to build nuclear weapons.

Reminder: Joe Biden, Barack Obama’s personal choice to be the man a heartbeat away from the presidency, wanted to divide Iraq into three weak states based on ethnicity, which would have created three apartheid-style states and ended up helping Iran establish dominance in the region. He opposed the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. And now, Biden is blaming America for Iran’s genocidal tendencies and the Russians’ and Chinese tendency to assist rogue states.

If Barack Obama had a problem with any of this, Joe Biden would not remain on the ticket.

Update: The Romney campaign responds to Biden’s comment:

All too often, President Obama and his administration have sought to blame America first, yet Vice President Biden’s reckless statement today blaming America for – of all things – the progress of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, has reached a new low. The problem is not America.  It is the ayatollahs who oppress their people, threaten their neighbors, and are pursuing nuclear weapons. President Obama’s naïve approach to Iran has given the regime valuable time to get closer than ever before to a nuclear weapons capability. Vice President Biden’s comments are wrong and completely inappropriate. Mitt Romney will stand up for America and our allies, and he will not apologize for America’s leadership role in the world. –Lanhee Chen, Romney Policy Director
