Breaking: Zimmerman Likely to Face Charges

Florida state attorney Angela Corey is holding a press conference at 6 pm eastern time this evening, at which she will announce her decision regarding whether George Zimmerman will face any criminal charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. The news conference will be held in Jacksonville, FL, not Sanford, where the shooting occurred. Jacksonville is about two hours away from Sanford.

Corey announced on Monday that she would not refer the case to a grand jury. Press reports suggest that she will bring charges against Zimmerman, charges which could range from murder to manslaughter. Press reports in this case have tended to be wrong, but perhaps they are correct this time.

Zimmerman’s attorneys resigned from the case late Tuesday, stating that they had lost contact with him and could therefore no longer represent him.

Update: Under Florida law, first degree murder charges must be referred to a grand jury. Corey’s decision not to refer to a grand jury means that Zimmerman will face second degree murder at most.

Update: Where is George Zimmerman?

Lawyers Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig on Tuesday expressed concern about Zimmerman’s emotional and physical well-being, saying he has taken actions without consulting them. They also said they do not know where Zimmerman is.

“You can stop looking in Florida,” Uhrig told reporters. “Look much further away than that.”
