United Nations Sides with Afghan Rioters Against the United States (Updated)

The president claims that his apology regarding the inadvertent burning of Korans in Afghanistan “calmed things down.” He is, as usual, wrong. The United Nations, which we host on prime real estate and which absorbs billions of American taxpayer dollars, has now sided with the rioters to demand punishment for the US troops involved in the burning.

“After the first step of a profound apology, there must be a second step … of disciplinary action,” Jan Kubis, special representative for the U.N. secretary-general in Afghanistan, told a news conference.

“Only after this, after such a disciplinary action, can the international forces say ‘yes, we’re sincere in our apology’,” added Kubis, without elaborating on what action should be taken.

Obama, in a letter of apology to Karzai last week, said the burning of copies of the Koran had been “inadvertent” and an “error”.

Distancing the United Nations from the anti-Western uproar, Kubis lamented the attack on a U.N. compound in Kunduz province in the north last week, which angry demonstrators charged with weapons. U.N. staff was relocated around the country.

“We were not the ones who desecrated the holy Koran,” Kubis said. “We deeply, deeply, profoundly respect Islam.”

Well, Islam doesn’t deeply, deeply profoundly respect you. After kowtowing to it, the fable Islamic street probably holds you in deserved contempt. This sequence of events demonstrates clearly that the fabled Islamic street not only does not respect you, it will kill you on a whim.

There has been, to date, no call from the UN or the Islamic Republican of Afghanistan’s government to punish the Afghan troops who murdered ours in cold blood. All of the rage is directed at the Americans who committed an error, not those who have willfully killed innocent people.

Today, I can’t think of a reason for a single American to remain in Afghanistan, or for America to remain in the United Nations. Both are behaving as our enemies.

This is major test for our young and out of his depth president. If he acquiesces and authorizes punishment for our troops, and especially if he allows any Afghan or UN role in that punishment, he too will side with the rioters. But if he does not, he risks losing some of that world adulation he obviously craves.

Update: The president’s apology calmed things down so much that two more Americans have died for an absolutely ungrateful Afghanistan, a country that has come to define the phrase “lost cause.” They clearly want their squalor. We should leave them to it.
