President at Fundraiser: American Story has Never been About Individuals

President Obama told supporters at a $15,000-per-person Miami fundraiser today that the American Dream is not about individuals, and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said that while the 2008 election was “historic… 2012 is personal.”

” As tough as these last three years have been, think about everything that we’ve accomplished together. Because of you, we averted a Great Depression,” the president said, continuing on to tout the auto-industry bailout and healthcare reform.

“The American story has never been about what we just do by ourselves; it’s about what we do together,” Obama said.

He called the Republicans’ philosophy “simple: We are better off when everybody is left to fend for themselves, everybody makes their own rules, a few do very well at the top and everybody else is struggling to get by.  That’s their core vision for America.”

The president reminded the crowd that in 2008 he said “I’m not a perfect man… and I won’t be a perfect president,” but said he’d fulfilled his promise to always tell people where he stood.

“It takes more than a single term, it takes more than a single president,” Obama said. “I promise you, change will come.”

Wasserman Schultz, who introduced Obama, said a Republican president “would devote their entire time in office to reversing the progress we’ve made.”

“And I don’t know about you, but I’m not goin’ back,” she said. “I’m not goin’ back. We will finish what we started in 2008.”
