Chick-Fil-A Offends Campus Leftists at Duke Law

Nothing surprises me anymore.  Since leaving the Justice Department, I’ve travelled around the country, speaking at law schools about election law.  This week I was at Duke University and learned that providing a debate audience free food from Chick-Fil-A is offensive to the Left.

The Federalist Society is an important law school student organization across the country.  If it weren’t for the Federalist Society, law school campuses would be dominated by an aggressive and ideologically driven Leftist agenda.  The Federalist Society exists to foster discussion about conservative and libertarian constitutional principles at American law schools.  If there is any organization that deserves your support, it is the Federalist Society.  If the American experiment is to survive, it will be essential to have lawyers conversant in our grand American ideals, and able to defend them.

The need is especially acute at the “elite” law schools where things have gotten entirely out of control.   The Federalist Society always offers free lunch to debate attendees.  At Duke, apparently, giving away free Chick-Fil-A offends some Leftist law students.

Most Americans had no idea that Chick-Fil-A is a pariah to gay activists.  “If you eat Chick-Fil-A you are anti-Gay,” says one blog.  Duke University’s Federalist Society has offended the local chapter of “OUTlaw” because they serve free Chick-Fil-A to lecture attendees.  Seriously, I’m not making this up.

Phil Aubart, the Duke University Federalist President tells me, “I’ve been confronted several times about serving Chick-Fil-A.  ‘There are other places that serve chicken sandwiches’ is a common refrain.”  The agitation at Duke Law comes from the president of “OUTlaw.”

If the Left gets agitated because someone is giving away free chicken sandwiches at American law schools, just imagine what they are doing to the students who support limited government and Constitutional liberty.
