Unless this is some kind of hoax of unparalleled proportions, the gaffe-tastic photo of Obama idiotically waving his hand in a group shot of world leaders, blocking the face of one of them (Tsakhia Elbegdorj, the president of Mongolia, as far as I can tell), really is an authentic photo, and is worthy of Internet infamy.

When you see the second pic w/no hand up, the people around Obama are in different poses. The man behind his left shoulder is now smiling, and the woman in front has her head turned to the right. They are different pics.

Everybody looks exactly the same in each picture. The question here I believe is, did someone photoshop his hand in the air? I don’t think they would alter anyone else in the picture because that would defeat their purpose. Why on earth would they change the other people’s expressions? That would definitely make it look fake. We should ALL know by now how arrogant this guy is. If you think he is a good president then all I can say is “you’re an idiot.”

In the first pick you’ll notice that you can see most everyone’s hands except Barry’s – except the one that is up. I’m sure the photog said something cute about Obama’s hands and he raised one to be a smart-ass…which was when the photog clicked…one of probably 20 -30 pics taken for this shot.

It’s RUDE to put your hand that close to anybody else’s face. People universally hate that. Even beauticians, barbers, doctors, dentists, and others who have legitimate business touching someone’s face tell the person before they start doing anything.
If you’re in a group photo setting, you hold still so that you don’t bump or obstruct anybody, you look toward the camera, you put a pleasant expression on your face, and you don’t try to grandstand or to draw more attention to yourself than is your due.

I am sure that even Mr. Obama knows how rude and unacceptable it is to do something like this. As president he has a responsibility to uphold a certain dignity as he represents the nation as a whole. He has been in office long enough to realize that on the world stage one does not make gestures lightly. It would take a great deal of crassness and insensitivity to do something like this. I do not believe he is that rude, cloddish and stupid. He even has staff who coach him on how to behave in situations that he is unfamiliar with. So I can only imagine that this is photoshopped to make him look bad.

If you take a good look at everyone else, there are people with their heads tilted in certain directions in the 2nd photo, and not at all in the 1st.
Also, the second photo has almost everyone’s teeth showing, while in the first photo, hardly anyone’s teeth are showing.

What really surprises me is not that the incident occurred (this *is* Obama, after all), or that the photo was taken, but that it was released.

I saw the hand photo earlier in the night on Daylife before it was on MSNBC. I follow BO photos religiously and why anyone would think it is a photoshop is from shear ignorance. Getty doesn’t photoshop.
However, Getty takes photos of Obama that increasingly make him look bad…angry faces..pouty faces etc. Getty isn’t photoshopping, they’re editorilizing. Good for them!
While I’m the first to concede that gaffes, often the visual equivalent of typos, sometimes more serious, are front page news when committed by people the media doesn’t like (e.g. any Bush, Sarah Pallin) and ignored by people they do (Obama) I still think this issue is exaggerated here.
While a professional photographer I made a practise of photographing group shots two or three times and picking the best. This usually avoided the ‘blink as the flash fires’ problem but I have picked out yawns, looking elsewhere other than the camera and simple unpreparedness. No human being is capable of checking 54 faces at a distance of possibly 10 metres at 1/60th of a second while simultaneously attending to a camera and keeping track of the circus going on around him. (Let’s assume at least an equal number of body guards, flunky’s and oh, so important and prickly officials). That is why photographers shoot several.
If we ignore the big ‘O’ for a moment and look closely at the third, non hand waving photograph for a few seconds we see at least five heads of government looking away from the camera and two partially obscured by the head in front. Resolution is too poor to pick out blinks.
Normally the client would receive the best of the bunch and the others would never see the light of day. However assuming the photographer is paid by the picture and not a lump sum it’s not hard to sympathise with a photographer submitting everything in the expectation that editors will agree with his choice of the most successful and ignore the ‘hand in front of the face’ ones.
Exactly. It’s always possible to take a picture that makes some *appear* goofy. We’ve all seen them. Guy scratching his face looks like he’s giving someone the finger or picking his nose. Someone giving an emotional speech, pronouncing a certain word, looks like a maniac or a baboon. Like you said, these are the pictures we usually DON’T give to the client – or to freakin’ Getty Images for distribution via the Internet.
I wonder what Getty’s standards are regarding photos like this. Does the photographer choose which pictures to submit or is it all or nothing? Does someone at Getty choose which ones to accept? If so, why would they keep an obviously flubbed group shot? Would they have accepted one in which Obama was yawning or had his eyes closed?
Seems more like a quality control issue than a political one.

Because it is such a wide shot, the photographer used a short lens with a wide field of view, which means greater depth of field. Everyone should be in equal focus, but in the close-up, you can see that they arent. Obama is in sharper focus than those around him. The photographer used Obama as the point of focus. That is what makes it look like it is photoshopped.
However, with the other supporting images, and the watermarked getty originals, it clearly isnt a fake. Also, in the close-up you can see that all the subjects are lit from the same source. Yep, it is real.
This is most unfair. Obviously President Obama is raising his hand so that Tsakhia Elbegdorj can kiss it before the photo is taken.
I hate the prez’s policies and think he is trying to destroy the country as the free, Capitalist utopia that it once was, but when this kind of photo op is presented, there are hundreds of pics taken. OK so one of them showed his hand up and the photo editors didn’t squelch it but let it loose on the Internet. No big deal.

I too am no fan of Obama’s, but lighten up, everyone! Haven’t you ever done something like this during an official photo? When I was in the service, my whole unit slyly gave the photographer ‘the bird’ during a unit photograph. The commander was pissed, but it was worth it.

The non-wave shots are clearly different photographs, taken either before or after the wave photo. Compare the faces of the other leaders around Obama. The African leader to Obama’s left is not smiling in the wave shot, but he is smiling in the non-wave shot. The woman below and to Obama’s left turned her head in the non-wave shot. Differences can be seen in several other faces.
The photo is real, Obama is a tool waving, “Hi look at me!”

I opened it up in Photoshop and took a close look at the offending hand. It is not a shopped image. There are several tell-tale signs of manipulation, including pixels from the original image you can never quite seem to get rid of, which are simply not there.
There is also no moire effect or blurriness around the hand you would expect to see had it been shopped in.
Additionally, there is the shadow of his hand on the Mongol’s face, which, had it been shopped in, is something you would not expect to see, most fakers miss those little details.

I know the left is relieved to have a president that isn’t an embarrassment like Bush.
It seems to be a sitting where several pictures were taken. In the one with Obama’s hand up several people are caught looking off in other directions. Maybe Obama was horsing around, maybe he was waving at someone when the picture was taken. Then they took more pictures… in the photos without Obama’s hand almost everyone has a different expression. It reminds me of a high school class photo where there is always someone out of position or making gestures and the photographer takes it again. So, no big deal.
Take a closer look. In the close up shots the people surrounding Obama have different looks on thier faces then in the larger photo. You can also see that Obama’s head is at a tilt in the “hand” photo but not in the larger getty photo. And think about it, if his hand was in front of the man’s face where did the pic with the man’s face come from? It’s obvious photo shop or an outtake owned by Getty not meant as the official photo.

Having photographed many large groups at weddings, the larger the group the more photos that need to be taken since there always seems to be something going on with one person or another. Many times even after taking many pictures there would not be a clean one and I would have to transfer a head with Photoshop or just choose the least bad photo. When photographing a wedding I wanted some good group shots that would sell. I think that maybe in these photos the photographer had a sure “sell” for his photo and a lot of people who wanted to be doing something else besides standing around for a photo so he went with what he got.
It looks photoshopped and I think he is left handed so would probably wave with his left hand? Now if he had both hands up and his nose up, it wouldn’t surprise me at all!

Before the picture was snapped, the photographer asked the group to show by raising hands how many had to hide their socialist ideology in order to get into office.

Seriously, have none of you seen Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band? Don’t you know the code? Obama’s hand isn’t over anyone’s face, but above the head of the guy a row down. That indicates, in “Paul is dead” code, that the guy under the hand is dead.

I would much rather a President wave to someone during a break in the photo-op than what G W Bush did in Haiti. After shaking the hand of one of the disaster victims, Bush apparently couldn’t stand having touched someone like that. So he wiped his hand on the back of President Clinton’s shirt.
This picture is silly. Look at press pictures of Obama waving – the skin tone of his hand is consistent with his face. And his arm is certainly NOT white. Also 3 dark callous spots that Obama has on his last three fingers are not seen here.

Of course those who do dot support Obama will enthusiastically support anything that disparages him without looking too far into it.

If a photog shouted “is President Obama here so we can get this started?” this would have been a normal reaction – while I am a hater, I don’t always haftobe hatin.
The irony of all this attention to a one-second wave is that obscures the cognitive dissonance between the nature of the event, which was to promote openness and transparency in government, and the reality of the Obama regime, which obfuscates and prevaricates on scandals such as Solyndra, Lightsquared, and Operation Fast and Furious.
They have several different photos on their site. Look at the woman just in front of Obama and you’ll see her looking different directions (there were certainly many cameras for such a photo shoot).
Also Obama’s head is tilted, which is a natural reaction due to the arm being raised to offset the balance of weight (try it yourself) Also his jacket at the buttons shows a bit of a crease, and opening at the bottom button, which is also natural when raising an arm.
Look carefully at the picture with Obama’s hand waving. You will see a SHADOW on the man’s face directly behind him, with spaces – the shadow of an open hand wave, and a shadow on his shirt as well, from Obama’s arm – he’s the only one with shadows on him (again, for such a photo shoot, a well lighted area is necessary).
I think the picture is not only real, it was an impromptu moment of humor.
Look at the reaction on everyone’s faces. Those are not your typical “smile for the camera” smiles. Instead those are “haha look at that.. he’s blocking that guys face” smiles of laughter.

Some people are so easily fooled, no wonder we keep ending up with government officials who continue to destroy our economy. They tell you their first priority is jobs, but as soon as they take control, they say their most important issue is making sure President Obama is a 1-term president. They know the sheep/people will forget, as they are so easily deceived.
Some of you are just so gullible, it’s not even funny! You can dislike President Obama or anyone else for that manner, but at least have integrity and a legitimate reason while showing some self-respect and honor.
