That said, I’m no hero-worshipper, and I’m not blind to anybody’s faults. If Putin actually said such a thing, he was seduced by the Iranians, and he was very, very wrong. But then, I’d have to see the actual report of what he said, preferably in the original Russian.
For most people, it’s very easy to be seduced by a charismatic figure who appears to be friendly and affable in person. I seem to be immune to that. FDR and Churchill were seduced by Stalin; I see Stalin as a pockmarked omnicidal psychopath. Secondly, those who comment in a manner to dismiss the Ayatollah ignore the depth of depravity and the cleverness of the Iranian regime. They have gotten away with support for terrorism for decades. They have out maneuvered the west in terms of their nuclear program. Have made common cause with Russia, North Korea and China; have avoided U.N. sanctions that could have crippled them and delayed all of the rest. They argue for genocide with no price to pay. They enslave they’re own people and there is no international outcry.
They have reached the nuclear red line and no one has been able to do anything to actually stop them. Putin’s agenda is to destabilize the West and praise for the Iranian regime supports that agenda. Nasrallah is bought and paid for by Iran and the connections are more frightening that reported above. Both the Ayatollah and the President claim to be talking directly with the 12th Imam. The fastest growing segment of the Iranian power structure to adopt the cult of the 12th Imam? The Iranian Revolutionary Guards, possibly the most powerful segment of the Iranian power structure based on, not only their, police power but on the amount of the economy they control.

Landreaux: Your point is well taken (by an ardent hater of the IRI). It is extremely unwise to underestimate one’s enemy in general, and the Iranian mind in particular, irrespective of who is leading it / forcing it into various actions. They aren’t chess masters for nothing.
On the other hand I would like to remind all that Hitler was received by an overwhelming chorus of good will from the all the world’s leaders, many of whom made the holy pilgrimage to Berlin. In part out of relief in his “civility,” which he indeed did displayed (as if that was a portent of anything “good”), in appreciation for his seemingly erudite manners (everything was judged relatively, as is always the case), and lastly, let us not forget, in his prolific kissing of babies.

In the event people aren’t up on Turkey (forgetting their relations, or lack thereof with Israel), Erdogan, in true Machiavellian form, has utterly neutered the one bastion of Turkish stability that loyally assured Ataturk’s legacy for nearly 100 years: the Turkish Army (almost entirely untainted by politics). Most unfortunately, the Turkish Army allowed themselves to be blindsided in a similar way as Hitler did to the Jews: by very slowly implemented and increasingly heavy-handed laws or directives of highly questionable legality, penned by Dr Zeus… sorry, I meant Erdogan.
The Army should have been more attuned to his strategic thinking. But now, the last bastion of a powerful secular-Islamic country has all but fallen. I’d say it might give even Russia cause for worry as NATO can’t fully control Turkey anymore — one small example: Turkey hasn’t participated in standard, and “De-rigeur” NATO military exercises (ostensibly due to Israel’s involvement, but also as a way of “showing their independence from the USA” — you know, the “Big Satan”) for at least 2 years in a row now. Not a good sign.
The only “good sign” (again) is that Iran and Turkey are both escalating a battle for Middle Eastern supremacy / hegemony (not to slight Egypt, but they’ve got many years in which they will either slowly catch up or quickly descend into food riots and massive civil war).

I thought Putin went to church and professed to be a Christian. As far as I know, Christ has not returned, yet. We’ve got clergy going around thinking they can blend religions into one and if they are true to their faiths, they can’t. That doesn’t mean we can’t respect the right of each to worship as they please as long as they don’t harm others in doing so.
