Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said he feels “liberated” by the shake-up last week that resulted in the resignations of most members of his presidential campaign’s senior staff.
Gingrich characterized his disagreement with top aides as being over whether to run a grassroots-style campaign versus a more traditional approach. The former Speaker’s campaign manager, longtime spokesman and captains in key primary states resigned en masse last week over the disagreement.
In other campaign news, Gingrich also feels “liberated” from high poll numbers.
An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released today revealed that an all-time high percentage of the public holds an unfavorable opinion of Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich.
The poll shows 48 percent of those surveyed have a negative opinion of Gingrich. That’s higher than it was during the Lewinsky scandal, when Gingrich was speaker of the House. Only 16 percent have a favorable opinion of Gingrich — down eight points since April.
