Club for Growth to Trump: You're a liberal!

Frankly, it can be difficult figuring out just what The Donald’s politics really are. He has pronounced the last two presidents the “worst in history,” to the point that it’s lost meaning when coming from him. Trump to Obama — worst in history (probably true). Trump to Bush — worst in history. And “evil.” (Neither is true.) Either we’re on a really bad presidential streak, or Trump jumps into hyperbole to create headlines and buzz.

According to the Club for Growth, Trump is hiding a big flaw of his own: Liberalism. And the club backs it with some facts.

Trump: “We must have universal healthcare”: We must have universal healthcare. Our objective [should be] to make reforms for the moment and, longer term, to find an equivalent of the single-payer plan that is affordable, well-administered, and provides freedom of choice.  (Source: The America We Deserve, by Donald Trump, p.206-208 & 218)

Donald Trump favors a massive tax hike on Americans that would kill jobs and investment: I would impose a one-time, 14.25% tax on individuals and trusts with a net worth over $10 million. For individuals, net worth would be calculated minus the value of their principal residence. That would raise $5.7 trillion in new revenue, which we would use to pay off the entire national debt [and shore up the Social Security Trust Fund].

The club has more, including a look at Trump’s protectionist streak on trade. Coming from other groups, this criticism might not have much sting, but the Club for Growth has positioned itself as a strong voice for pro-business policies and Trump is billing himself as a strongly pro-business candidate. The “liberal” slam therefore may leave a mark. It certainly says that, at least at this point, Trump won’t have the club in his corner.

Add in the fact that Trump’s right hand man, Michael Cohen, is a registered Democrat who voted for Obama (Cohen claims a measure of repentance over that vote, but he has also switched parties out of political convenience before) and you have in Trump a figure who needs to go a couple of extra miles of backtracking before he can earn any conservative’s trust.
