Andy McCarthy: CBS reporter Lara Logan and rape under Islamic law

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy has a bombshell of an article posted this morning at National Review using the brutal attack and sexual assault of CBS reporter Lara Logan to unveil some ugly truths about the treatment of women – especially non-Muslim women – under Islamic law (sharia) and the example of Muhammad (sunnah), whose favorite concubine was a Christian slave girl, Mariyam. McCarthy observes:

Tahrir Square is also the place where, in the frenzy after Hosni Mubarak’s fall, CBS news correspondent Lara Logan was seized and subjected to a savage sexual assault by an Egyptian gang. Coverage of the attack has been muted. There have been testimonials to Ms. Logan’s courage, and one anti-American leftist lost his comfortable fellowship at NYU Law School for failing to conceal his glee over the atrocity. We have heard much about the attack, but have heard next to nothing about the attackers. You are just supposed to assume it was a “mob” — the sort of thing that could have happened in any setting where raw emotion erupts, say, Wisconsin’s capitol.

Except it doesn’t happen in Madison. It happens in Egypt. It happened in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, in the riots that led to Suharto’s fall — as Sharon Lapkin recounts, human-rights groups interviewed more than 100 women who had been captured and gang raped, including many Chinese women, who were told this was their fate as non-Muslims. It happens in Muslim countries and in the Muslim enclaves of Europe and Australia, perpetrated by Islamic supremacists acting on a sense of entitlement derived from their scriptures, fueled by the rage of their jihad, and enabled by the deafening silence of the media.

As Jihad Watch director Robert Spencer has detailed, al-Azhar University endorses a sharia manual called Umdat al-Salik. It is quite clear on the subject of women who become captives of Muslim forces: “When a child or a woman is taken captive, they become slaves by the fact of capture, and the woman’s previous marriage is immediately annulled.” [The section cited is Book o9.13, p. 604 in the English translation – P] This is so the woman can then be made a concubine of her captor.

This arrangement is encouraged by the Koran. Sura 4:23–24, for example, forbids Muslim men from consorting with the wives of other Muslims but declares sexual open season on any women these men have enslaved. (“Forbidden to you are . . . married women, except those whom you own as slaves.”)

Read the whole thing.

Another example that McCarthy could have cited is Islamic cleric Sheikh Taj Din al-Hilali, the most senior Australian Muslim cleric, who is 2006 said in response to the conviction of a group of Muslim men who were responsible for a string of gang rapes that the women who did not wear the Islamic veil were also to blame for their rapes, characterizing unveiled women as “uncovered meat”. Al-Hilali only apologized after being publicly rebuked by Prime Minister John Howard.

It should be noted that the Shafi’i book of Islamic law cited by McCarthy that permits the enslavement of non-Muslim women, the Umdat al-Salik, was not only endorsed by Al-Azhar University, but also received the endorsement of Taha Jaber al-Alwani, then-president of the Fiqh Council of North America. Al-Alwani was also the head of the institute that trained and endorsed Muslim chaplains for the US military. The English translation of the Umdat al-Salik was most recently published by Amana Publications of Beltville, Maryland. My edition was printed in 2008. It is available for sale in virtually every Islamic bookstore in the United States.

While McCarthy’s article is certain to get Media Slanders and the rest the Left wing smear machine working overtime, it’s doubtful that the establishment media will take up a serious discussion of Islamic law (which some of those Left wing smear machines deny even exists!!) and the statements made by these senior international Islamic clerics.
