I heard that a lot of writers smoke marihuana because -they said- it help their imagination, while some others take LSD for the same purposes. Some journalists pretending to be historicians, as Uki Goñi, also. That´s not a problem since anyone can do with its live what he or she wants. What is dangerous is the reader who believe the stories told are true. If somebody describes the USA as a country that lost its values, adding "if they ever have one different of ruling the world at any price", showing the country only from the point of view of the murder of Sacco & Vanzetti, importing Von Braun and other germans, the existence of Mc Carthy power, the different invasions of other countries through XX and XXI centuries, culminating with the two presidencies of George W. Bush, there would be a general claim saying that all that is only one side of history and they would be right since USA is not only that but a great country with great open people and its values. Same thing happens with Argentina, a total different country from the one fictional described by the novelist and its source: Uki Goñi but with something else compared with the example I´ve given before about USA. The novel is a total nonsense and do not resist any racionality. If the novelist have decided not to travel but insist in writting about countries that he doesn´t know, there are still good history books written by serious historicians and not those written by a best-seller hunter like Uki Goñi. 300.000 argentinian jews can give this testimony.

OmegaP,

Thanks for your interest in the reference. See the Contemporary English Version 1 Corinthians 3: 19. Here Paul is said to be referring to: The Lord has said: "These people praise me with their words, but they never really think about me. They worship me by repeating rules made up by humans. So once again I will do things that shock and amaze them, and I will destroy the wisdom of those who claim to know and understand." (Is 29:13-14 CEV). Perhaps Isaiah has a message for you. After all your handle, Omega, may refer to ultimate meaning and 'atheist' may only mean a person who doesn't share your words for ultimate meaning though I believe I agree with you that ignoring traditional texts makes life more difficult.

Michael,

Do you recall where that statement is from in the Bible? I don't recall that wording in any of the Letters.

I also think your explanation seems more than a little bizarre. Jews are the oracles of God in general? Including Jewish atheists?

It seems we have gotten into the subject of anti-Semitism. While having this subject in the back of my mind I ran into a statement of St. Paul: “"God catches the wise when they try to outsmart him.” Jews, like their father Abraham, tend more than others to speak as if God talks to them (vide Rosenbaum infra). Sometimes what they say is inappropriate. In disputing these things sometimes others ‘outsmart’ what they themselves feel are the rules of God or their superego. Then they have a dispute with God and a Jew and may attack the Jew out of their conflict with the former, out of ‘God catching them.’

That was an illuminating post. Thank you for posting it. Indeed, it sounds similar to the comments I made in regards to your previous post. And yes, the fact that Argentina was a safe haven for many former Nazis is shameful, which is compounded when taken with the visa refusal issue. However, as I pointed out previously, Argentina was hardly alone in refusing visas to Jews. While I don't know how many the US refused, we can safely presume that thousands died because of that policy. Finally, I found your comment that some don't think those "count" to be both disengenuous and unkind.

To figure out what Argentina was, we have only to look at Iran today. Iran is an exotic, sophisticated country whose people are beautiful, whose bazaars are full of treasures, whose art , architecture and archeaology are splendid...and who vote for fascist rule and worship with "Death to the Jews" signs on the walls of their most splendid mosques. Obama's National Security Chief Dennis Blair testified before the Senate yesterday. His reaction to a nuclear Iran was a shrug of his shoulders, and Senators Feinstein and Bond gave him a pass. Our leaders of all stripes from the President on down now carry umbrellas.
