Blame It on Fox News: The New Liberal Campaign to Close Down the Network
If that is the case, Massing should also be calling for an investigation of MSNBC. Its roster of “objective” anchors includes the ultra-liberal group which includes Chris Matthews, the just hired Al Sharpton, the just hired Chris Hayes of The Nation, Ed Schultz, and of course, the indomitable objective commentator Rachel Maddow. One of his charges is that Fox gave attention to “Climategate,” which he calls a “faux controversy.” As readers of PJMedia know, it was anything but that. But one is supposed to take Massing’s word for what is true, and what is false. After all, his words appear in The New York Review of Books. How could anything written in their imprimatur be anything but the truth?
Another thing he accuses Fox of is perpetrating during the 2008 campaign “troubling excesses and outrages,…which repeatedly sought to tie Obama to Bill Ayers, Louis Farrakhan, ACORN, and the like.” Somehow he omits Rev. Wright, since even Massing cannot fail to admit that tie. Let me take one of Massing’s examples, that of ACORN. Was Obama tied to the radical activist group at all? Let me cite what a sympathetic history of the group, written by one of its major admirers, says:
Using TV ads, accusations by local Republican officials, and the national debate, the McCain campaign took the opportunity to link its opponent to what it called an outlaw leftist group. Despite ACORN’s endorsement of Obama, he immediately distanced himself from the group. “The only involvement I’ve had with ACORN,” Obama told the media, “is I represented them alongside the U.S. Justice Department at DMV’s.” Dismayed, Bertha Lewis [ACORN’s then chief ] knew that Obama had failed to disclose the full story. For example, he had worked with ACORN on voter registration in Chicago. In addition, while he served on the board of the Woods Fund of Chicago, which funded antipoverty activism, the group had channeled $75,000 in 2002, to ACORN’s Chicago office. Before a television audience of more than sixty million, however, Obama had separated himself from ACORN, which had endorsed him in the primary election and helped him get votes.
So whom do you believe, ACORN’s sympathetic historian, or Michael Massing, who believes Obama’s own obfuscations?
So what Massing asks for is that the major media, not only outlets like The Nation and the NYRB, join him in going after Fox News. He is upset that media critic Howard Kurtz, now with The Daily Beast, has defended Fox and its aggressive stance in going after targets, including 60 Minutes style of TV ambushes. When Fox does it, Massing is mad. He quotes Kurtz as saying that news organizations are “not supposed to get along with these people….We’re supposed to hold them accountable.” Isn’t this supposedly the job of the press? Is Massing upset that Fox is doing that to a Democratic president whom he supports? Would he be as upset if a news network did that to Richard Nixon during the Watergate investigations, or would he say the same thing as Kurtz?
So Massing asks that the press investigate Fox’s programming, its ties to the Republican Party and the Tea Party, and to conservative think tanks and organizations. Does he also favor investigating NBC’s corporate contributions, how they affect MSNBC’s programming and the like? Is he upset that Morning Joe was forced to suspend journalist Mark Halperin for weeks, because of an inept word he used to describe President Obama’s political tactics? Or does he wish that he had been permanently fired? If someone used that term to describe George W. Bush when he was president, would Massing have argued that Halperin be given a Pulitzer Prize for telling the truth?
Yes, Massing is beating a dead horse. We don’t need him to tell us that Bill Sammon, Fox’s DC managing editor, is a conservative. We know that from checking out the book he wrote on George W. Bush. Yet Massing ends by saying the press should investigate Sammon’s “part in shaping the channel’s strong conservative slant.”
What Massing does not get is that Fox — which does have liberals regularly on its programs and does present their views — is obviously conservative. MSNBC has some conservative voices — particularly on Morning Joe — but its prime-time schedule and anchors are largely on the far liberal/left. Viewers, therefore, have a choice as to what shows they wish to watch. Massing wants Fox News off the air, because people choose to watch it, and they do not choose to watch MSNBC, whose ratings continually are far below that of its competitor. His answer is a federal investigation, leading to the network’s suppression.
This is the liberals’ real agenda, and that of Michael Massing, the media critic. It is to close down Fox News, and prevent people from hearing alternative views to those he subscribes to.
Decades ago, when the singer and actor Kris Kristofferson put out his first album, it contained a song he titled “Blame It On the Stones,” referring to how anger at the new youth culture was blamed by many people on the success and record sales of The Rolling Stones. Now, the Left has an easy answer why Barack Obama is falling daily in the polls: Blame It on Fox News. After all, why else would the electorate sour on our great charismatic president?

Excellent post, as usual. More blood in the water is here: http://nymag.com/news/media/roger-ailes-fox-news-2011-5/
“and hired hosts like Glenn Beck who openly sympathized with its agenda.”
glenn beck’s gig at fox started in jan 2009 before the tea party thing started in feb 2009.
Crush dissent! Scratch a lefty, find a Fascist.
No, wrong. Leftists attempt to eliminate opponents of their program to destroy natural human society and normal mores/culture. Fascists suppress opposition to their programs preserving culture, religion, and tradition (i.e., normal society).
Mr. Radosh,
I was watching Morning Joe one morning over a yr. ago when Mika burst out on the air that the WH just texted her refuting what they were talking about. I also remember one time when Maddow and Olbermann were invited to the WH but I don’t recall why.
If you cannot win fairly, then cheat. Oh, screw that. Jump straight to cheating.
Exactly. Al Franken agrees too. lol
It’s been said by others that the Left’s political battle plan, pretty much, consists of – “if we can’t win in the arena of ideas, cut off their access to Joe Six Pack’s TV. Or at least smear ‘em ’till they stink up the joint.”
As we’ve seen, the Left (usually) can’t win on ideas, so what you’re watching now is Plan A in full tilt.
Actually, eliminating Fox News might be tougher than the goon squaders planned on. For years they’ve been trying to get the microphones ripped away from Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Reilly et al. But occasionally when the battle dust settles, that earlier mentioned goon squad are the only ones who end up stinkin’ up the joint. What occurs to me is, those guys might have better success in ridding the news and entertainment oulets of their targeted opposition by starting off a little lower on the broadcast food chain. But who? How?? And how low???
I’m thinkin’ an easier to hit set of targets might with a few opening practice rounds at Ward,June, Wally and the Beaver. See, they’re still occasionally seen on the tube acting a liiiittle to mid-America for the Soros clan. But if the first target proves too evasive, they might try focusing the Morning Joe Mob at a few softer targets like … Ozzie and Harriet. Even David and Ricky might be some easy pickins. However, if all else fails, perhaps somebody at MoveOn.org can start a smear campaign against Hazel, Dennis Mitchell or his cranky old neighbor Mr. Wilson. Maybe even that pig on Green Acres. I mean, we all know pork’s not P.C. enough. And it’s apparently not good for you. Right?
Look, these are just early black and whites, with emphasis on “whites.” So how tough could it be? Hey, we might be talkin’ a little retro retribution here.
In the end, if that group of characters can’t be eliminated from showing up on The Classic TV Channel, then the only other suggestion I can come up with would be to start a letter writing campaign to see if some Native American group can be granted reparations for TV’s early use of that Indian Chief in a war bonnet profile on those end of broadcast day test patterns in the ’50s.
Like I said – how tough could it be?
These grizzled, old images should be easy enough for the MoveOn’ers to practice-up on. Then again, the NPR types, the ones who are either history deficient or under 55, might be a little too short in the tooth to know what I’m referring to. That and they might think Kung Fu is some kind a hip, European mustache.
Anyway, let me know how it goes. If you need me, I’ll be at the downtown Denny’s working on a Grand Slam Platter from the breakfast menu. Seniors still get that early morning discount.
See ‘ya!
If Massing or any other leftist tool feel they have something on Fox, they should suit for slander, incitement to riot, sedition, libel, or whatever they can prove in court. Maybe Murdoch should let his own dogs loose on them.
It would not surprise me if liberals try to silence dissenting voices on the internet too. Thank God for new media and the tea party.
As far as the Left is concerned, America can listen to any news station it wants, so long as the station carries the Left’s meta-narrative.
And here I thought, Leftists were liberal (after all, they do call themselves, liberals) – but ah yes, they are liberal – they will liberally censor anyone who doesn’t agree with them (and they will liberally call that person a ‘terrorist’).
Bohemond – spot-on.
Because the left saw the failure of the first two years of the Clinton Administration as not going for nationalized health care fast enough, they fast-tracked that legislation when Obama took office. But they didn’t wage all-out regulatory war on Fox News and talk radio right away, because they were supremely confident in early 2009 of their strategy to use Obama’s status as the first African-American president to give anything he supported a veneer of Absolute Moral Authority that would, along with Alinskyish playing of the race card, marginalize all of Obama’s political opponents.
They didn’t sic the FCC or the Justice Department on Fox News or the AM radio fallers right off the bat because they didn’t think they would need to, and now it’s too late to do that without provoking a negative reaction not just from conservatives (who they don,t care about anyway) but from the moderates they need to win back in 2012. But this error is being filed away in the memory bank, and the next time the Dems elect a historic first woman/Latino/Asian/Jewish/Muslim/gay/tramsgendered/animal/vegetable/mineral as president on whom they can again bequeath the Absolute Moral Authority card, shutting down Fox News and bringing back the Fairness Docterine to cripple talk stations will be one of top items on the “to do” list.
commies have always tried to silence dissent. nuttinu. everything Americans have held dear is reviled by this bunch. they tried to grab the guns, didn’t work (thank God). they have tried to spend us into chaos so as to sieze everything we have, jury is still out there. tried to rut the u.s.s.c. into a marxist stamp on legislation, and are one judge away from that.
they have scoffed at anyone who dared question the divine one’s lack or legitimate credentials. he disregards the law. name calling of one’s enemies to silence has always been commie standard fare. the list of their attacks on our country is long, gun running, shutting down our capitalistic system, and on and on. now they want to try to shut down the right wing media. is anyone really surprised?
The left believe in democracy the same way HAMAS does. One and only one election then democracy cease to exist. Didn’t we hear early in Hussein Obama rein that the some on the left wanted to change the 22nd amendment just to please the messiah
Its just the leftist journalistic equivalent of penis envy at work. The very sad, sad thing is that most journalists do not, as they did in times past, go out to investigate and dig up news–they sit on their a**es and call government officials and regurgitate what is told to them. If they don’t their access is removed and they might actually have to get up and find the news for themselves.
I don’t know how old the profession of journalism is, but more and more it mirrors that of what is acknowledged to be the oldest profession.
What morons like Massing fail to see, indeed are constitutionally incapable of seeing, is that Murdoch’s News Corp. business model is successful because it is predicated on mirroring a significant segment of public opinion. Massing, et al. cannot see that because they approach publishing from the opposite direction – they are all about shaping public opinion to mirror their own opinions. Murdoch’s brilliance with Fox News was to provide an outlet for conservatives and libertarians that was lacking elsewhere. That is why Murdoch is a very wealthy octogenarian with an attractive young wife and Massing is a sniveling turd.
Hypocrissy is the I-Beam of the Left/Dem/Liberal plafform, Hic!
Don’t you understand there is only room for one point of view. If you give the people choices…well…it would be just too confusing for the poor dumb masses. They just need a check with supervision on how and what to spend it. After all how can the average person begin to sort out what is right for himself? I mean, they probably can’t even tell you what State Harvard and Yale are located in. How can you begin to expect the masses to understand the difference between Keynes and Capitalism? We don’t teach that stuff in public schools and since we don’t teach reading either how could they possibly know? I mean giving both sides only causes fights. Better to let those of us that went to the right colleges make those hard decisions. Then everyone could just sit back and relax and enjoy the fast ride to Utopia. (In case you couldn’t tell that is sarcasm)
It may be that the attacks on Fox news occur because many of Fox’s contributors actually have a moral compass and principles – something that Commies despise!
During the heated public sector teachers union battle in Wisconsin, the FOX News crew covering the story were repeatedly shouted down with chants of “Fox Lies”. When one of their reporters asked can you name one thing that Fox lied about they could not. There is an “official” attempt to silence Fox for covering stories that others will not or are told not to.
You mentioned that Fox often has liberals on to voice their opinions, which is true. In fact they have so many of them that they actual frustrate their conservative audience, including me. Fox is successful because, like it or not, they more closely represent the majority of people in our country. Any business must know their customers and give them what they want. That is why MSNBC and the rest are trailing way behind Fox in the ratings. They only appeal to a small sliver of the country.
They speak about “fostering the Tea Party and amplify its message” (sic) like that’s a bad thing. It’s a bad thing only if you begin with the presumption that the Tea Party Movement is a bad thing and then proceed to support your conclusion with “facts”.
The presumption is fallacious. Or is the new spelling “fellatious”? Probably ought to be.
There is MUCH more to the story, including the role of the Soros-funded “Media Matters” in a leftist hit job against Fox News.
See: Who owns the media – and what can we do?
Oh for the days when dissent was patriotic. I remember when a fat lady, formerly of the W H, was screaming,”dissent is patriotic” as if anybody was trying to silence her. It wasn’t that long ago, was it?
One network, One, and the left can’t abide it. Crush it, the better to lie and not get caught. That’s the way it is with the real haters, as it always is with Nazi’s, Communists and other statist gangsters and murderers through history.
See these scum for what they are and remember.
If Fox is brought down by the liberal progressives, can PajamasMedia be far behind?
I think we all know the game, and I mean at its most focused, powerful, vicious play. And we know the undiminished intent of its players.
What is its future? That is my question. Half of my being, probably more than half, just tunes them out and believes an individual objection to them is an exercise in existential futility and actual futility as well.
In fact, in our Capitalist competitive society, they are apparently viewers to support both our Media and the MSM. Then it can only be the viewers of the MSN who can exert influence on what they watch. But there is a twist here. When viewers of the MSM switch channels the MSM hasn’t responded by saying, oh my God we are losing viewers, we must be doing something wrong. Instead the former viewers are now a menace to society and traitors.
Network news apparently follows the formidable life experiences of those who at the top run them. Radosh points out that Roger Aile background is a Republican and its Washington DC manager, Bill Sammon, is a Conservative. I assume likewise Chanel 2, 4 and 7 controllers came from Democratic backgrounds, but centrists liberals friendly to but still not the same as radicalized Democrats.
So what have we? A fight for the soul of our Country and a not inconsiderable sideshow – can and/or will the Democratic Party de-radicalize itself and become the Party of Robert Wagner again?
I doubt it.
Is the left’s target Fox News — or, generally, diversity of thought and opinion? U.S. Supreme Court opinions that celebrated free speech and dissent once were cheered by the left. What happened to the liberals and progressives — or should we conclude that their once-vaunted support for free speech never was based on principle, and merely their opposition to Republican officeholders.
The New York Times, August 4 — I see from the copy of the paper in my local library –I cannot afford the paper’s $2 newsstand price — has an image of the caged and bedridden Hosni Mubarak on the front page, above the fold. How many liberals, today, are gnashing their teeth that they never did get a similar photo of Richard Nixon?
IMHO, Fox’s nightly Special Report is the best on the air. O’Reilly is entertaining, Hannity is an aggravating flame thrower and Greta is a pleasant end to the Fox night for me. I sometimes switch to network programs, briefly, but they are juvenile. The other cable preachers are inferior. I avoid CBS now that Scott Pelley (patooie!) is in charge there.
“As Juan Williams recently pointed out, the British News of the World hacking scandal does not seem to have extended into any of Rupert Murdoch’s American properties.”
“Does not seem”? Well, then let’s drop it.
PS – I mean, if you can’t trust a Fox employee giving Fox a (sort of) clean bill of health, who can you trust?
And if one can’t suppress other viewpoints what’s the use of being a liberal?
Let the lefty media knock themselves out investigating Fox; they sure produced a huge trove of revelations with their Palin email probe!
The Palin e mail probe? That’s the one that Editor Bill Keller didn’t mention a few days later when he announced to a waiting world just how unimportant Sarah Palin was. Not a word. With a straight face.
Then his private ambulance drove him to his psychiatrists office for the usual.
The anti-traditional-values media had complete control for decades. Then, along came Fox and the internet, so they must be extremely frustrated. Their efforts to destroy the values that created America and made it the beacon of freedom for the entire world haven’t worked. According to Coulter’s “Demonic”, the leftists are only 20%; according to a recent Gallup poll, 90% of Americans believe in God. Hayek’s history of the evolution of traditional morals, in “The Fatal Conceit”, shows these qualities are the reason humans prospered and multiplied from tiny bands into what we have today. It seems that if we destroy those values, we will destroy our civilization.
“It has promoted preposterous conspiracy theories, peddled blatant falsehoods, and given a soapbox to all sorts of cranks and crackpots.”
How dare Fox put DWS on the air spewing her blatantly crackpot falsehoods.
The left will never stop until it has destroyed all media it considers opposition. They are starting at the top and working their way down all the way down. So pretty soon even the local weekly throw on the lawn newspaper or the rural market 500 watt radio station will submit to the lefty will.
The sentence in the piece I partially agree with is the following:
It violates “every journalistic and ethical standard.”
It left off the last part which would make it the absolute truth.
It violates “every journalistic and ethical standard of the liberal left by telling the truth.”
Their ethics are “keep the mushrooms in the dark and feed them BS so we can accomplish what we came to do”.
George Soros was not the first one in this country to go after Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. That honor belongs to Ted Turner, founder of CNN which is now part of Time Warner. Google “ted turner and george soros” and you get 316,000 hits. There are several people that work for both News Corp and Time Warner (including sports) that have made me suspicious for years. They are Bernard Goldberg, Joe Buck, Nina Easton, Larry McReynolds, Kyle Petty, Matt Yocum, Dick Stockton, Pam Oliver, Adam Lashinsky, Adam Alexander, Ralph Sheheen, Leigh Gallagher, Chris Neville, and Lindsay Czarniak. Whose side are these people on?
We know that McReynolds and Petty will be in Atlanta Labor Day weekend for SPEED (Part of News Corp)’s coverage of the NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. What sort of surprise does CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a Georga-licenzed neurologist and professor at Emory University in neurology, have for them?
I like Fox News but have given it up because their advertising-to-meat ratio has gotten worse lately.
“First they belittle you, then they ridicule you, then they attack you, then they fight you, then you win.”
All they have to do is prove that Fox is at least as dishonest and untrustworthy as, say, the NYT, or the WaPo, or NBC, or CBS or ABC, or CNN or….oh wait, that won’t work out the right way, will it.
If the Socialists take over the Internet and the Fox News people this nation is doomed.
MSNBC aka MSDNC is extremely corrupt and they lie far more often than FOX. Google the words “MSNBC lies” and read up on media critic sites as well as review articles written. MSDNC lies all the time, even PolitiFact.com has written up some of the lies, they don’t catch them all but this company is worse than FOX. MSDNC anchors are not that Objective, Google Chris Matthews suggesting journalists should be SUBJECTIVE, yes he called for it. You can find that story on Mrc.org
No one has tied Fox to any thing, do they sometimes lie, of course all the media do. Anyone want Congress to investigate NBC bribing Iraqi officials or MSNBC aka MSDNC using stolen emails provided by the fecal brains at Media Matters…………I’m alleging that Media Matters obtained those emails from Bill Sammon’s email account by some 3rd party who hacked FOX’s computers. FOX has been hacked before, odds are no one stole the emails, they were hacked and MM bought them which is still a form corporate espionage.
You clowns will not stop FOX with such lunacy and you know it. Hell its funny to read, the weak and powerless inventing lies that will never do a thing but promote FOX.
You clowns encourage people to tune in and watch. You send more viewers with all this free advertising. Hell libs promoted Rush Limbaugh with daily rants, people tuned in and some grew to like him, not my forte but he’s right on many times even those the rhetoric is annoying. Congrats liberals, you promoted FOX and Rush because negative articles transform in to free advertising so negative press translates into increased ratings………..MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! Please stop wearing those 3 day old panties you bought used off Ebay and try to grow up and at least pretend to be adults.
