Kristol was a cordial wit but also an opportunist who set the trend for so many of his apostate friends who suffered from “cultural amnesia,” in the words of Rahv and Macdonald. Kristol was one of the leaders of an intellectual mafia whose members still include Radosh, Klehr, Haynes, Tanenhaus, Weinstein, Horowitz, among others. Stylish chauvinists all, but oblivious to history.

Your input on this provides much perspective about the many principals (esp. the late Mr. Kristol), the events and how they occurred in real time, back then. Thank You.

"McCarthy had said he would “stand or fall” on this charge that Lattimore was “the top Soviet espionage agent in the United States.”

Joe McCarthy too often was unable to distinguish between an outright spy, a Communist fellow traveler, or a naive dupe. Harry Truman, for instance, naively defended Alger Hiss---but he most assuredly was not a Communist spy! But once again, I must ask this question: why was Joe McCarthy almost single handedly fighting the good fight? Where were the more sensible and levelheaded political leaders who could have balanced out the Wisconsin U.S. senator's excesses?

Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr's disgraceful shabby scholarship regarding the Great Depression has caused enormous damage. The dumb argument that FDR "saved capitalism" is still widely held. The morally and intellectually bankrupt Harvard University left-wing community did not hesitate to severely damage the careers of those daring to legitimately criticize one of their own.

Irving Kristol was a great man. May God bless him.
