Wagner's music can't be separated from his views either. His anti-Semitic beliefs about Jews and their alleged corruption of music and society are reflected in some of his operas' characters and symbols. Music has often played a sinister role in captivating listeners through its beauty when the music is tied to ideas that demean innocents or exalt murderers. Not all art is political but the two are intertwined more frequently than supposed.

I recall reading somewhere that Seeger has made at least a partial apology for his political views. Can anyone confirm or deny, and if so, tell me just how much he has apologized for?

Ron, your last sentence should be understood by everybody.

I do a radio program Wed. nights and noticed Seeger's birthday. My buddy and me wanted to play, 'Way Out There' for we do enjoy Seeger's tune. Nonetheless we played a version other than Seeger's and mentioned nothing of this sad, despicable man.

Getting older I find it easier to 'Separate the artist from their lifestyle'. Though this doesn't ring true of old Pete..

The Post modernist mindset inherently rejects the lesson of history. We really shouldn't waste too much time learning about the evils of communism---because that is so "yesterday." We are of the New Age and the world is constantly evolving to the point that our reality is vastly different from those of our recent ancestors. I doubt very much if most recent graduates of Harvard University, Princeton, Yale, and the other Ivy League schools truly comprehend the evils of Communism and the disgraceful behavior of Pete Seeger and other useful idiots. They probably have no idea what Ron Radosh is talking about. Their teachers have likely told them that Communism, at worst, is an anti-reactionary doctrinal set of beliefs that tried to make the world a better place. Eventually we may even find the right leaders and it will be successful. Many Americans today are convinced that the admittedly flawed Joe McCarthy was the real threat of that era! Joe Stalin. He supposedly was far less evil than the Wisconsin U.S. senator.
