Just as a point of information, In NYC the teachers union, the UFT has a secret ballot for union elections. But when you vote, the envelope with your ballot has your union ID number on it as a way of supposedly preventing fraud. Nice.

As Murray Kempton put it, labor unions also eventually became “refuges for incompetent white men.”

McGovern may be acting out of long-held principles, but I’ve also read that running a small business after he left politics had an effect on his outlook. Either way. good for him for speaking up in defiance of his erstwhile supporters.

“The Great Coalfield War”

There is often a good case to be made for the first generation of any union. Our hearts go out on behalf of the suffering workers victimized by their employers. The problem, though, usually kicks in sometime during the third generation when the union is well established. It then become something of an organization of thugs able to force industries to capitulate to their often unreasonable demands. These unions, it must be added, not only hurt the employer—they also make it more difficult for those of modest financial means to buy the goods and services of their respective bosses.

The majority of Americans are repulsed by the proposed card check legislation. In other words, the Obama administration dares not openly push it. No, it will deceitfully
do so by employing back door methods.

How card check works in real life:

When WWII ended, my father and my uncle, his older brother, having survived the ghetto and the camps, walked back to Poland from Germany to see if anything was left and pick up the pieces to start over. To eat, they got jobs in a factory that had been taken over by the Communists. On Fridays there would be a mass meeting of the factory workers with the Party leaders. There would be speeches and accolades for the wonders of production that the workers had achieved during the week. Then would come the moment when the Party boss would stand up and say “At the request of the people, the Party asks that the workers donate their Saturday and work for free to increase production to heroic levels.” Then came the kicker. “Who ever is against this, raise your hand.” Remarkably, no one raised his hand.

My father and uncle hooked up with the underground and got themselves smuggled into Allied territory after about three months of this.
