It is foolish to provide Geneva Convention protections to terrorists. And our doing so in Vietnam---did not exactly work out well for the innocent people in that region. Countless victims died because of our sometimes foolish "noble sentiments." Americans should indeed shy away from torture. Nonetheless, it naive and likely dishonest to denounce torture if the situation requires it. Is somebody really saying that they would not torture a major terror suspect, for instance, to save the city of New York?

"...main things that sustained him when he was being tortured by his North Vietnamese captors"

Sustained him? John McCain eventually broke under torture. He is a quintessential example that it works. Alas, it behooves me to once again remind everyone that American lost to the North Vietnamese---and millions suffered the consequences. Does anyone truly disagree with John Yoo? If so, please explain what would you do instead. Last but not least, does Marty Peretz disagree with Alan Dershowitz on this issue? Did I miss something? I thought they were both on the same page.
