Good article outlining a biased idiocy on behalf of The Nation with regard to Israel. One wonders why they write what they write. What is their hoped for outcome? Do they want Israel to just stop the fighting so that Hamas can grow and prosper as a military unit for Iran that can fight Iran's proxy fight against Israel with Iranian rockets and Iranian bombs? What's proportional response? Hamas, a terrorist organization that presents a clear and present danger to life and property and existence in and of Israel must begone. If the Arabs don't get rid of them, then others must. Cease-fires are good, but sometimes fighting is necessary to achieve a workab le cease fire.

"Thankfully, the current administration understands this..."

It does? I voted for George W. Bush twice---and I don't think he has a clear picture of the situation. After all, the current president has allowed Condi Rice to constantly make a fool of herself. I'm sorry but the politically correct Bush leaves much to be desired. He admittedly is likely better than John Kerry or Al Gore, Jr. and therefore the lesser of evils. That's unfortunately the best I can say. Is Barack Obama a self-hating American? Does he even slightly embrace this mindset? This is the big question of the day. I am amazed that I seem to be just about the only one harping on this point. Oh well, such is life.

The notion that this is a political war and not simply a war of attrition and opportunity is pure idiocy. God willing Israel will continue this campaign and use the opportunity to slay as many HAMAS leaders as possible. Hopefully Shin Bet and Mossad are also doing their duty. Arabs, and particularly Arab proxy armies, seem to be extremely responsive to physical violence. Even if the present campaign only results in a hudna, perhaps sufficient violence will make that hudna longer than the traditional period.

As an Israeli, it is heart-warming to see that there are still people in the Western world (most of whom are admittedly in the US) who still understand basic concepts of right and wrong, just and unjust.
In a way, one can say that Israel is an outpost of Western civilization in a sea of fanatical religious extremism and intolerance. And much credit for our success at protecting ourselves and "making the desert bloom" is due to you, the Americans.

Thank you!

Donna, my friend, if I am not mistaken, it was the Village Voice that dumped Mr. Hentoff. My compete disdain and repulsion for The Nation remains intact, however.

The argument that Aza, Judea and Smaria are occumpied territories by Israel is based upon revisionist history.

The Jews have lived there in some for for over 2,000 years.

The Arabs who live there now are almost entirely made up of those Arabs thrown out of Jordan during the Arafat era there and their descendents.

It is the Arabs that are the invaders into Aza, Judea and Samaria not the Jews.

The Jews are defending their homeland for over 2,000 years which was firstly taken from them by Babylonian, then the Romans, then the Ottoman empire and finally falling into the hands of the British before partialy being given back to the Jews in 1948.

Though in fact the original Balfour declaration did in fact call for the return of all the former land that belonged to the Jews and not just what is now recognized as Israel by the rest of the world and Israeli leftists.
