Were the Rosenbergs, et al, guilty? Yes.
Were they all that effective? No.

They went to their deaths thinking they really had helped Stalin get the bomb. Their apologists think so to this day and some even say that preventing an American nuclear monopoly excuses all.

Truth of the matter is that the information passed on by the Rosenbergs more or less confirmed what was already known elsewhere.

In 1945, the country most capable of mass producing atomic bombs was Japan. Yes, I said Japan. They had seven cyclotrons up and running. All they lacked was fissionable material. And had the U234 made it through with that load of U235, their problem would have been solved.

Six cyclotrons were in mainland Japan, were blowtorched and sunk at sea. The 7th? It was in Wonsan, North Korea and fell intact into Soviet hands.

Joe Stalin got The Bomb from the Japs, not from the Rosenbergs. About time some leftist noses got rubbed in that fact.

In fairness, one could easily support strong measures against Islamist terrorism without believing it to be a fundamental danger to Western society. In fact, it's precisely because I'm confident that the West will ultimately do what is necessary to protect itself from Islamist terrorist movements--while the latter, despite their bluster and apparent confidence of victory, are actually far too weak, riven and lacking in vision and competence either to exploit Western weaknesses effectively or to recover from effective Western countermeasures--that I don't really consider them to be particularly dangerous in the long run.
