Jeff, I certainly appreciate your devotion to the Constitution, but I would be interested to understand your take on Andrew McCarthy’s article from the National Review Online, outlined above.
When people hide behind the skirts of women and children and lob bombs…then protest at the return volleys that “innocents” are being “slaughtered”, I find the crocodile tears to be a tad disingenuous.
Similarly, when an Imam who speaks with a forked tongue says one thing to fan the flames of hatred and to plant a victory stake in the ground over the ashes of our deceased countrymen, I find the weeping and gnashing of teeth at the “attack on religion” to be equally farcical.
The “bridge” to “understanding” might start with not desecrating the graves of the innocent victims by those who mean to ululate and pass out candy again at their death site.
A dear friend of mine is a former Director, I have nothing but admiration for those who serve in the Bureau, but you have the narrative completely wrong, in my humble opinion. The Constitution needs defending, but is rendered as meaningless pulp if we don’t defend the country that it was constructed to serve.
Purely and simply, a mosque can be built anywhere…there is no offense in honoring our fallen countrymen with a safety zone of a couple of blocks. Those that wish to make peace with us, can build all the mosques they want…without trampling on the memories of the victims of 9/11. There is no other significance to this site and the Imam is a provocateur. Pick a side. The Constitution won’t crumble if they build a couple miles away or more. And the bridge they “seek” will be made of stronger stuff, covering that greater distance.
