Islam is not compatible with the Constitution of the United States.
Specifically, a Muslim is not free to leave Islam. Islamic law or sharia forbids apostasy, that is, a declaration that one no longer believes. Citizens of the United States are recognized to have certain fundamental freedoms which Islam does not recognize.
The Koran does say that there is no compulsion in religion. But in practice, for Muslims, this is not true. Punishment for apostasy varies in all Muslim countries, from death to banishment, but there are always consequences.
I would like to see this issue brought to the Supreme Court. A decision declaring this specific Islamic law as fundamentally opposed to the freedoms afforded all American citizens would advance the reformation of Islam.
