The MSM is fully aware that millions of Americans accept what they hear at 6 pm and 10 pm to be the truth, and that only 10% to 20% of the electorate care enough to do their own research into politicians’ accomplishments, plans, history, etc. Because of this, the media has an implied duty to be objective, and to resist urges to take political “sides” (non-profit government sponsored media are required by law to give equal time to all main political parties, of which we presently have just two.)
The MSM loves its power, so I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for a public apology.
But the electorate is to blame as well. Every voter has an equal power to influence elections, and with that power comes the responsibility to know enough about choices so that votes are intelligent, thoughtful choices. The media made so much of a fuss over Obama’s “black” status (even though he is 1/2 “black” and 1/2 “white”), that the African-American community saw in him their chance to occupy the White House. With exit polls showing that 95% of blacks and 43% of whites voting for Obama, his victory was all but assured. The MSM loves and cherishes its power to sway public opinion, so I seriously doubt that we’ll see any mass apologies from those pseudo-reporters. They got their jollies out of villifying Bush Jr. AND portraying John McCain as a Bush rerun. The MSM was so caught up in the thrill that they were helping to usher in “Change” that they failed to investigate Obama’s history of change. Had they done their job, they would have found little of substance in the big-city community organizer, except for some legislation that he championed on campaign finance reform. Obama even agreed to limit campaign spending to the same $85 million that McCain would be allowed to use out of the federal presidential campaign fund, but reneged on this promise when in early 2008, he realized he could outspend McCain by an overwhelming amount if he opted to use the campaign funds that he and the Democratic National Committee had raised. So after proclaiming that large private campaign financing was dangerous because of the negative influnce that money could buy, Obama flip-flopped 180 degrees when that money had the power to get him elected president.
So my questions to Obama voters are as follows:
Why did you vote for Obama? What “facts” about the candidates (especially those “facts” put forward by a non-trustworthy mainstream media)? What did you think Obama meant by “change?” Have your thoughts about Obama changed since election day? If it’s true that, as Bill Clinton said “It’s the economy, stupid!”, why is Obama still spending so much time campaigns to get the public to support his health care system overhaul while his Treasury Secretary still has to fill over a dozen key positions in the Treasury?
This country is going to Hell in a handbasket – a basket made with the cooperation of an asleep-on-the-job media and an electorate unwilling to think for itself. If you’re not proud of yourselves, please promise either to do much better next time OR at least stay out of the way of those of us who take the responsibilities of government seriously and have the best interests of the country in mind when we mark our ballots.
