I’m going to go with clueless. He’s listening to bad advice, coming from advisers who either have a malicious agenda or think Cain is Mitt Romney (not saying they are Romney supporters who infiltrated the Cain campaign, but rather that they are giving Cain advice as though he were an establishment candidate, which is not helpful to Cain). He doesn’t know what he’s doing, so he asks for help from people he expects know better, but they are either unwilling or unable to give him the advice he needs.

At this point, Cain’s only hope of winning is for his wife to reassure everybody that there was nothing improper going on here AND for Mike Huckabee to throw his support behind Cain (Palin won’t make the first move, and even if she did it wouldn’t carry enough weight). If that happens, MAYBE Cain can be the beneficiary of Ron Paul’s attack ads against Newt Gingrich.
