Roger L. Simon

Duranty Prize Awarded

May 6th, 2014 - 10:29 am

Anyway, looking back briefly at last year’s Duranty honorees, we find as runner-up Bob Simon for his 60 Minutes segment “Christians of the Holy Land.”  That mini-documentary blamed the Israelis and their infamous security wall, not the Muslim terrorists who engendered its construction, for the plight of Christians in the West Bank.  During last year’s ceremony Roger Kimball called this 60 Minutes segment “a textbook case of employing the trappings and authority of objective reporting in order to further the ends of ideology.”

Was Roger correct?  And how!  Just weeks ago a video surfaced on YouTube from an exceptionally brave young Palestinian Christian woman named Christy Anastas.  Christy is living under political asylum in Britain now, an asylum she obtained in a record three days because she is under constant death threat from West Bank Islamists.  Ms. Anastas, evidently, appeared with her family in Bob Simon’s segment when she was still in Bethlehem, but she wasn’t particularly pleased by the way it was edited. In an eloquent speech at Upsala University that I commend to all of you, she contradicts literally everything Simon put forth on 60 Minutes about who is responsible for the Christian flight.  Of course, she may be biased.  Her uncle was blinded for life after being shot in the head at point blank range, not by an IDF soldier, of course, but by an Islamic terrorist — a curious omission, among many, from the 60 Minutes segment.

I should have known better but I was so outraged when I saw Ms. Anastas’ video that, on behalf of PJ Media, I called and emailed the executive producer of 60 Minutes Jeff Fager for a comment or reaction.  You may be astonished to hear that I have received, thus far, no reply.

As for our grand prize winner last year — the Duranty itself  – as many of you will recall that was awarded to Joan Juliet Buck and editor Anna Wintour for their charming Vogue magazine  “at home” with the trendy Assads:  “Asma al-Assad: A Rose in the Desert.”  Where is Asma anyway these days?  It seems she’s disappeared from view, for some reason. No more shopping trips to Mayfair apparently.

A hundred and fifty thousand corpses later, it’s astounding that anyone could have ever written such cynical fawning tripe, even for a fashion publication. But that’s why we have the Duranty Prize — to make people stop and think before they do something as horrible as that…. or at least to call attention to it when they do.  Duranty’s photo, it is always worth noting, still adorns the wall of the New York Times along with its other Pulitzer winners.  Some things never change.

And now on to this year’s prizes.  James….

Leftists hate to be ridiculed. They are humorless, vain, angry people and to be laughed at makes them furious.

This is why we need the Duranty award, and we need to applaud it and celebrate it and direct scornful, derisive laughter at these lying liars. More, please! And thank you!

A new category is needed for Carney: the Bagdad Bob award.

It has been a while since the nominations. I forgot who I nominated.

The winners were all deserving.

I think Krugman deserves not just an award, but a category. The Income Equality Duranty...IED Division.

And Jay Carney as well. The "Benghazi Emails are not about Benghazi and are not emails" Division.

Is Rather eligible for his own award?

Well, crap. I was really pulling for Candy Crowley, but I can see giving it to David Kirkpatrick.

But I want to start lobbying now to give next years Rather Award to Paul Krugman. It isn't just the "quality" of the lies, its the sheer quantity that make him stand out.

Just out of curiousity, Roger, is Jay Carney eligible for a prize? The Baghdad Bob Award, maybe?

Not Roger here - but obviously Jay is not eligible, unless PJM feels like establishing a "Lord Haw-Haw" or "Tokyo Rose" award.

Pushing the propaganda line of their Masters has been in the job description of "Press Secretary" since that particular breed of flack was first decanted from the brood sacs of the Government blood suckers.

"On other nights we celebrate journalistic excellence… as in the Pulitzer Prize"

I'm sorry?

The only difference between the Pulitzer and the Duranty (who won one of the former) is that the former pays more. I believe K. Parker actually mentioned this when she won one, that it was for the politics of her writing rather than the content.

We could save time by just letting the Pulitzer committee pick the winners of the Duranty.

Oh, sorry.

PS - Just because I cherry-picked that line to make a comment doesn't mean I didn't enjoy and appreciate the rest of the article and all of your efforts, including creating this amazing franchise.

I believe that in the light of the later work of Seymour Hersh and Peter Arnett, their earlier work reporting on VietNam, for which they were so highly praised, ought to be reexamined. Because the Press was so lockstep defeatist, it is likely that their reporting then was even more mendacious than their more recent reporting. And that goes for the rest of the Press Corps of the time.

As cfbleachers noted, we really need a Krugman award. This award should reflect the continuing and unending use of strawmen, gratuitous insults, and empty rhetoric of false accusations toward those who disagree with the writer. It should also reflect the unending arrogance of the writer. Hypocrisy should also be a factor. For example, complaining about income inequality while accepting a $225k/yr sinecure would be both a fine example and a high bar for competitors.

It might be hard to find anyone who can rise to the level of Krugman, so it may not be a true annual award. In the case of no suitable candidate, the award should be retained by Paul Krugman. I expect he will have a sting of retentions.

Ahh yes, Hersh the then celebrated doyen of far left .calumnious columnists. I have nothing but visceral loathing for that ilk of mendacious 'calumnists' . Far leftism and calumniousness have always been not only complementary but synonymous. There is a rich picking of the present crop of 'calumnists' for potential Duranty honorees. Kudos to Roger for the idea and the latest selection of well deserved dishonorees.
