I reject the scenario of the GOP’s demise which is easy to do because Shrubby hasn’t even delivered a cogent reason for it to occur. Raw demographics don’t mean a damn thing when it comes to a middle 10% of voters swinging back and forth with the vagaries of the economy during the week of the presidential election or the TV presence of the candidates. (In retrospect, I wonder how Romney would have done against Obama. He’s telegenic, much more fluent in the economy than either nominee, unstained by the Washington insider CV. We’ll be speculating on this for years.)

But, in the spirit of playing along, I choose Old RPM Daddy’s 3rd option. The most intriguing slice of DC to watch these days is the Blue Dogs. With Murphy in NY’s 20th already asserting that he would join the Blue Dogs if elected, you can see scenario iii shaping up already. The Dems’ problem is that if it doesn’t evolve that way, they lose the 50+ seats the Blue Dogs hold now.

So, Shrubby, policy trumps identity politics in the long run and there are plenty of hardworking, religious minorities who will join the long, slow pendulum shift to the right in this country.

Maybe so, but the results of that failure should be as disturbing to you as it would be to a conservative. What happens if the GOP ceases to exist? Here are some possibilities (and I’m sure there are many others one could think of):

i. The Democratic Party is left as a more-or-less permanent majority. Without any competition, they cease to listen to the people they claim to represent. In other words, they’re about as customer-sensitive as a government-sponsored monopoly.

ii. Without any competition to unite against, the Democratic Party is beset with internal squabbling and intrigue, which leaves them incapable of responding to the needs of the people, even if they bother listening. That, or they find some new adversary to unite against. I hope it’s not you or me.

iii. The Democratic Pary splits into left and center-left factions, which, given the profligate ways of the Republicans lately, results in things bumbling along more-or-less as they were.

I’m sure there are other possibilities one could think of.

No. America’s “romance” with Stalin duing WW2 didn’t make him a “good guy” either.

If the GOP keeps doing what it is doing and expects a better result, they have a serious reality deficit problem. Don’t worry, this problem will take care of itself as the GOP fades away ! If you GOPers can’t adjust to change and give the majority of voters in the USA ( who will be over 50% non-white by 2050 ) what they want and need the GOP will not survive as a major party. Don’t think so? Wait and see ! IF the GOP adjusted to the demographic shift that is coming at IT like a runaway freight train, it COULD survive. But, then it would not be the GOP it’s redneck base has grown to know and love. So, in any case, the GOP as THEY know it will soon be history . Interesting days ahead for the GOP. What’s that saying? – What goes around comes around ? Or is it – You only get what God thinks you deserve . Me, I think the GOP deserves every little bit of what it is fixin’ to get ! I would only add that conservatives have tended to see people like the Shah etc as “bastards, but our bastards” whereas the left has, over and over, fallen in love with mass-murdering thugs. Not just in love, but head-over-heels, put-on-the-presidential-kneepads love.

Shrub, nice of you to remember Kevin Phillips since nobody in the Republican Party does. He has gone over to the enemy, so to speak. In American Theocracy Phillips has come full circle, becoming a very harsh critic of the Republican Party (GOP). PBS journalist Allen Dwight Callahan[1] describes the GOP "Politics Of Radical Religion, Oil, And Borrowed Money In The 21st Century" the book's subtitle and theme, as an "Unholy Alliance."[2] Phillips' last chapter, in a nod to his first major work, is called "The Erring Republican Majority." In the book, he "presents a nightmarish vision of ideological extremism, catastrophic fiscal irresponsibility, rampant greed and dangerous shortsightedness." Odd you should think of him. Must have come up in your seminar. Sort of like David Brooks.
