Clarke's books had a certain readability that made you feel as if you were moving too fast as he explained everything. My favorites were "Childhood's End" and "The City and the Stars" but everything he wrote made you feel like you were reading something important and feasible.

Clarke is one of my Heroes. His colaboration on a film about fractals made it possible for many people to know something about fractals for the first time.

I can't think of Clarke without thinking of Stanley Kubrick, who unfortunately didn't live a long life at all. Their movie together ("2001" of course) still holds up wonderfully well.

Pretty amazing considering that everything about that sort of movie-making has moved so far so fast in the forty years since it was made.
