As folks in the Balkans found when the Dutch stood by while various genocides occurred, NATO protection isn’t all that effective.

I wonder if the Israelis are confused about the utility of NATO (the not-US part is better than the UN, but that’s a low bar) or are using NATO as code for “the US”.

The Israelis are the only true realists when it comes to their survival. They know a chump when they see him and they know what works as a barrier. If the NATO demand is met, this will
be a very positive Bush/Rice success story which of course they will not get credit for.

Where are the NATO aliies on this one? Is Merkel and Blair aboard and what about the old naysayer himself, Chirac? All remains to be seen.

Mr. Egeland might have an aid racket going. He seems to have gotten a percentage of the 33% overhead that the U.N. charged for “Tsunami Aid”. I’ll try to find a link. This was heard on Fox, so… consider the source. Next to Roger, Fox has a real issue with the UN (Roger – you have every right to slam the UN – we’re with ya’)

Where’a Jan Egeland from? He’s both ineffective and self-hating with regards to his Western roots, big profile after post-tsunami and now Lebanon.
