Terrye:
Slam dunk. The press is already revving up the "chilling of the press, we are the victims, why are you attacking us, this is a disinformation campaign to distract the people from the crimes of the Bush administration, espionage, how dare you compare us to spys, how dare you doubt our patriotism, blah, blah, blah."
I have a simple question. If Al Queda was able to get a spy into the treasury dept, what would one of their primary tasks be? To find out the sources and methods of the financial tracking that the U.S. Government is performing. Praise Allah for Mr. Keller and the NYT.

The plot thickens. Will the papers give up the leakers or play the martyrs?

Which is better to investigate, the leak or the medium the leak currently uses?

Instead of being focused on the evil media (as many here seem to be) the Senator has his head in the right space, I think. When one is on a sinking boat, you don't empty the ocean, you fix the leak. The press are lackeys of the politicans (and the politicans sure are good at making everyone think otherwise). Making the press stop publishing leaks will only result in the leaks coming to light via a different medium, say, perhaps, the Internet. I think Ms. Huffington will be more than happy to post anything that was anonymously leaked to her.

The Senator has it right though, figure out who is leaking this stuff and deal with them, because the press (or any other form of media) are unlikely to be managed.

Roger: Segue of the day: Speaking about hiding under the skirts of the First Amendment, what do you have to say about the ongoing saga/kerfuffle between Michael Yon and the French publisher of "Shock".

Second Segue of the day: Speaking of French, how do I choose who to root for in the Spain v. France World Cup match....the Old Surrender Monkey, or the New?

Roger:
You cad! You are contributing to the "chilling" of the press. How dare the Senator call for an account of the damage these noble pressmen have caused. Of course Journalists should not be held to account or nor should they have to face the reality of their actions. They should be allowed to be free to expose all secret operations of our government, only the press should be allowed the veto of what secrets can be held (sources and methods of exposing government spy efforts) and only the press should be allowed to decide what government sources and methods should be kept secret.
