Chuck:
One problem with going back to 1900. The fact that there was little to no welfare system meant that the if you didn't make enough to take care of your family you left. The sometimes harsh free market put a natural limit on the number of immigrants that could make it here. We also had about half of the country that was underpopulated and thus the need for immigrants was more obvious. Get rid of the immigration laws and there will be multi millions from all over the world who will decide that they will take a flyer on life in the United States because the situation is so dire where they live now.And some corrupt regimes will take their cue from Castro and use the new open border to dump their criminal class onto our country. And of course we will have to use our already over strained public health system to handle the new immigrants. Laws are not the problem. Insane laws or laws that are ignored are the problem.

they, by and large, entered the country legally.

Yeah, and at the time neither a passport nor visa was required. You came on the boat, you were here. The immigration checkpoints were set up later in the century, I believe. It wasn't just the Irish, either. The Germans had a liking for beer that clashed with the abolitionists. There were disturbances when Teddy Roosevelt was police commissionar and tried to inforce the law forbidding NYC bars to open on Sunday. ISTR that he didn't agree with the law, but you see what the problem is. Too many laws! Laws make criminals, etc., etc. No laws, no illegals. I think George Will has a bit of a point when he says he would like to see the country return to 1900 ;)

Anyway, checking up on Teddy Roosevelt I turned up the following Mark Hanna quote about Teddy's succession to the presidency: "that damned cowboy is president now." Some things never change.

Smoke;
No need to apoligize. I agree, we don't need to throw up our hands and give up. But many on the amnesty only crowd are giving up. "Oh, we can't control the black market labor flow into our country." Of course we can. Countries all over the world control who is allowed into their country. "We can't round up every illegal and put them into jail so we have to give them amnesy." No, wrong again. Once we control our borders we can start to streamline the system of who we give legal status to, but it will be our decision and some will be deported. If we institute a forgery proof form of ID we can start to fine the companies that hire illegals. Phoney greencards are so cheap to get that many illegals present ID to companies, even though they know they are fake they can hide behind them. And none of this means that we are going to stop immigration of non-caucasion people into our country. If agriculture has a labor shortfall we can institute a guest worker program that doesn't leave these workers subject to the abuse that goes on today. All of this is possible and once we stop illegal, uncontrolled immigration we can reap the benifits that a rational, controlled immigration policy will bring us.

Kevin ñ

I am sorry but my post was in reaction to the histrionic of the comments by Observer6 and Scott. I understand what you are saying and I agree with you, but statements about how ìThe World as We Know It ©î is coming to an end and such are not constructive. Maybe I am being Pollyanne-ish but I was just trying to point out that we have faced problems of integration in the past and we will have to find solution other than throwing our hand in the air. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Sincerely,

Smoke

Roger;

Just another note on phoney arguments. Many of the leaders of the pro amnesty groups cite the cheap prices we get from the cheap labor of the illegal immigrants. But the moment these 12 million are given legal status they will begin the fight to eliminate the cheap wages, thus eliminating their argument about why we need the illegals. Our prices will go up anyway. They don't want the wages to be kept down, they often compare the illegals to the black slaves who were forced to come here against their will, but they advocate the cheap wages as a temporary tool to convince voters to support their cause. They lie through their teeth and no one calls them on it.

Smoke:
The argument isn't against immigration. No one is saying that legal immigrants can practice the religous traditions of their country. No one protests Cinco de Mayo. In Southern california the parks are filled with Persians on the day of their new year celebrations.Both my parents church and my brothers church have spanish and chinese services in their own language and it is beautiful. You are presenting a false argument. St. Patricks day, Columbus day ect, ect, ect. This attempt to turn the argument into racism and intolerence is phoney and a lie. The argument is about a insane counter productive immigration policy that abuses the illegals and the society they live in. The problem with the lyric changes in the national anthem is the fact that they changed the lyrics and they even tried to change the spirit. I want a National Anthem. Not 200 different ones tailored to each ethnic community that we have in this country.I want one united country, not a balkanized set of ethnic bantustans.
Legal immigration is a blessing for this country and I am all for it. An open border yet still illegal immigration policy is insane and the immigrants are often abused because of the system that we have. And if we change to a de facto open border by issuing amnesty every ten years those illegals who will become citizens will soon have their wages depressed and their quality of life ruined by the next twenty million that arrive on our shores.

Reference has been made to past immigrants. While it is true that in that day they had to organize and fight for acceptance, there is a key difference: they, by and large, entered the country legally. They arrived from their countries of origin and approached the U. S. with their desire to become citizens, then had to fight for acceptance within the population. They did not sneak in, hide their existence, then *demand* to be accepted simply because they were there. They, as a group, did not try strong-arm techniques to push their agenda on the country.

It is a sad state of affairs when a large foreign assembly can overrun the borders of the United States, no matter how, and not be treated like a foreign invasion. I don't weep for the U. S. of the future, I weep for the U. S. now.

During the mass migration of the Irish during the mid-nineteenth century St. Patrick?s Day parades were seen by the citizens of New York (as well as other places)very negatively

"Despised for their religious beliefs and funny accents by the American Protestant majority, the immigrants had trouble finding even menial jobs. When Irish Americans in the country 's cities took to the streets on St. Patrick's Day to celebrate their heritage, newspapers portrayed them in cartoons as drunk, violent monkeys."

http://www.historychannel.com/exhibits/stpatricksday/?page=history

Just because with mass media and the internet you can see these protests from around the country doesn?t mean that protests such as this have never happened. It is not that we don?t live in unique times in unique circumstances. It is that we forget that history has a tendency to repeat itself and to continue in the hysterical vain of ?I weep for the future? is to forget that they weeped for us as well.
