The book is &amp;#8211; obviously, from the title &amp;#8211; a benign look at American hegemony and seems particularly apropos after yesterday&amp;#8217;s election. The substance of Mandelbaums argument is they (meaning the rest of the world) may hate or pretend to hate us, but they really want us to continue to run things for everybody&amp;#8217;s benefit. From my more psychoanalytic perspective, it&amp;#8217;s something of a parent-child relationship with America in the role of D. W.
