Tokyo is different. English is spoken and there is some help in the subways and trains, but if you don’t have an interpreter, you can’t even read a street sign. Hard to talk to cabbies, but your concierge can write you a note to give to them. Particularly useful to carry a note saying where you are staying so you can get back.

Tokyo is a very safe city where even barmaids walk home alone at 4AM.

If you’re staying in a first class hotel i.e. the Okura, Palace, etc. you’ll have all the help you need, it’s just if you decide to wander around on your own you’ll find it aint Paris, Rome, or Berlin.

Vis-a-vis up-to-date…a friend of mine, when asked what Japan was like, responded that if the U.S. is a first world country, then Tokyo was a zeroth world country. I’ve wanted to go ever since and have never had the time. Perhaps it’s time to make time.

I was under the impression that Tokyo was normally 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles, but since we have Daylight Saving Time and they don’t, the difference would, as of now, be 16 hours.
