Carol, venturing a guess from your inside descriptions of Knesset (and "Arik" Sharon--which I'd never heard before), I'd place you writing from Israel. So, Oklahoma ain't no short trip for you. Suggest in the interim rent a DVD, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!", the 50s film made from the 40s stage musical. I dunno how them city boys did it, but they nailed that first few post-frontier southern Great Plains generations, perfectly--and in truly magnificent song and dance--even if you don't really much like song and dance--within an actual story, a plain old boy-meets-girl story with natural subplots all over the place (where they are in real life), human nature, vice and virtue, the land and the weather, politics and ambition, love and loss, all there in Americana language; it's a full, full thing, that film. And i'm not much for 'big' epics--"Oklahoma!" was a forced-watch via a daughter taking dance some years ago--but it's become an ritual (along w/ several Kubrick and Coen Brother's films): Every year or so the thought appears "Hey, it's gettin' to be time to watch "Oklahoma!" again!" Anyhoo, the off-screen part of the story is just as good, the reach out from the eastern seaboard to mythologize those plainsmen--by both the authors and the audiences who followed--is sweet nostalgia in itself (America knitting itself together), the incredible explosion of new music in 20s-40s America, the sheer exuberance and talent of the whole project, it's all pretty amazing. Try it. You'll laugh and you'll cry. I guaran-damn-tee ya, you'll thank me for the suggestion.

So true about 'Okie"...it's somehow a little too mean-spirited to use even in the joke round. Must go back to Steinbeck and those starved-out dustbowlers still in living memory. There's a photo, a mother, a skinny, careworn 30-something, trying to make do for a bunch of toddlers from a broke-down model T on the side of some God-forsaken dirt road...headin' to better pastures no doubt...but there's the world of hurt in her eyes...but she's too proud to admit it...you probably know that pic. Anyhoo, fie on whoever'd call her an Okie. So, same for everybody else too.

Buddy:

Just don't call me an Okie. I can call me an Okie, but nobody else can.

My Daddy used to say that my first words were kiss my ass.

carol, yes, little do people know the history behind the notorious gerrymandering, how the Dems when they owned the joint set up those rules with the purest cynicism. Delay merely gave them an object lesson in understanding the motion of the wheel--a necessary first step to any reform. A less gutsy, more expedient feller would've pre-kowtowed to the certain negative publicity avalanch and dropped the hot potato long before he picked it up.

Sorry, Terrye...guess that was a pretty horrible thing to open. Asher started it, though, Aunt Bee. Oklahoma? I guess you know, the way you can tell an Oklahoman is if his ma leaves the Marlboro in her mouth while she's tellin' the highway patrolman to kiss her behind. (sorry, old OU Weekend joke) ;-)

Yes, Terrye, Tom DeLay stopped a Congressional payment of $200-million smackeroo's from getting into the hands of the PA, as it currently is. And, they won't see this annual money until they end terrorism. DeLay has guts. He's decent. And, as Buddy (Barney) Larsen, the Texans had LBJ and democrats wall to wall. So, yes, I do credit Tom DeLay, Bush, and Karl Rove for knowing how to get Texans to change parties.

In the presidency Bush by 2004 had achieved success and recognition with the American People. However, in Texas he OWNED THIS ... from his days as the owner of their major baseball franchise; and then as governor.

This president has put together one of the best teams in government, in the executive office, and beyond, into the Congress, that most of us never saw before.

LBJ ruled with an iron hand. And, he actually made such terrible war decisions, and unrealistic decisions, domestically, that it's no wonder today the democrats are in such deep trouble.

But you can't win without besting your opponents. Delay knows how to do this. Pelosi? Barbara Boxer? Bookend bimbos.

Buddy:

Oh my God...Don't ever do that again.

One thing I will say for Delay, he has held up some of the money that was supposed to go to the Palestinians, until and unless they do what they are supposed to do.

Delay used to drive me nuts, but I am getting used to him. After all I grew up in Oklahoma.

Hell yes.

Whoa there, JenLArt, it'll take more'n a few paragraphs to explain Tom DeLay to anyone not from a state that a couple decades ago had elected ZERO Republican high state-officeholders since the Civil War...nor how brass-knuckle the state Democrats are, and what it takes to cope with 'em. And where did anyone make fun of Nancy Pelosi's age or gender...it's her expression that gets the guffaws...the more-I-lie-the-wider-I-open-my-eyes trick that she thinks is her secret. Please, let's us southreners not go to feudin' with these hyar Yankees n' Californees 'til we gits 'em fur nuf off in th' woods whur they cain't holler fer hep.

Aunt Bee, why tha's okay, in fact i got a big laugh!

Roger, I don't appreciate this--it's the cheapest kind of cheap shot...to make fun of their "looks."

Pelosi is a fraud, a shrew and a party hack who gives all women like me who are professionals a bad name and who makes "aging with grace" a joke for older women, too.

Tom DeLay is a good, decent man and a vocal friend of Israel, inter alia.

DeLay defends Life, Pelosi and her crew embrace Death.

It's funny how when the going gets tough, you always revert to your default "Lib Dem" position;

while you can't defend Pelosi, you try to denigrate the Right, not on the merits of their ideas and platform, but by superficial ad hominem.

It's "popular" to make fun of DeLay among the Leftist sneering crowd, but I think a smart man like you is capable of much, much better.

Next time, listen to what DeLay is saying very carefully.

He makes more sense and says what is true than you'd imagine.
