The only negative WAPO article I found among 5 that mentioned both Quayle and soccer is below:

Im a little late getting into the conversation, but the earliest use of “Gag me with a spoon” I know of was at the end of Heinlein’s “Podkayne of Mars.” Podkayne is in a hospital, and is about to speak when, she said, the nurse “Gagged me with a spoon.”

“Podkayne of Mars” was published in 1963.
