Draft Lileks 06! We need him here in the Great State of Minnesota! Mark Dayton's Capitol evacuation proves he's a wuss.

Here's another thought though: what if Dayton is right and all of our distinguished solons are killed in a terrorist attack? That leaves the "Stepford Senator"[I stole this description from P. J. O'Rourke--he was describing Dick Lugar, but I think the description is more apt of Mark Dayton-Smash]as the senior man on Capitol Hill.

Dayton's a lightweight, he's a few clowns short of a circus and...see Powerline for further information regarding Senator Odd. All I can say from personal observation is: Dayton's a weird dude. In 2000, I went to the Mall of America to see a debate between him and Rod Grams (the Republican incumbent that Dayton defeated). Dayton was wearing white socks with black dress pants, sneakers, a shirt that appeared to have been slept in, he had the twitchy mannerisms of someone overly medicated and no command of the issues. How this guy got elected I don't know (he does have lots of dough, which helps). Go home Republicans! We'll need you in case Dayton is right!

Regarding how cold it is here in Minnesota: you get used to it. You come to understand that permanent "hat head" is ok. You know it's too cold to be outside when your dog turns around and heads for home during a walk. If you can't breath because icicles have frozen and grown out of your nose, it's too cold outside. OTOH, we do have beautiful summers that begin in April and go until mid-October, and the lakes, rivers and countryside of Minnesota are just beautiful--especially in Winter, it's like a Currier & Ives print.

I know that you know the difference between "capitol" (a building) and "capital" (a city, in this context), but that pesky editor who keeps interrupting you evidently doesn't.

Mr. Smith already went to Washington, from the land o' lakes, in the person of the very much best-of-America persona of Norm Coleman, who finally flunked the very affable and personally sweet Comrade Mondale finally out of the electoral college. But, any law against a state having two old-fashioned ethicists? Then, if another of those archetypes, John Thune, can send Tom Thumb and the box he stands on back to the wherever they store obsolete lyin' Wobblies, then the 50s might be breaking back out all across the Northern Tier. The 50s have been rightly smeared for some gray flannel Jim Crow Freud-ulantism, but all that stuff is gone forever, and sans all that, what were the 50s? Style, man, and zest, and clarity, and...and...my (sob) lost boyhood. Run, James, Run!

Roger -

It's probably just as well. Based on this article, just because a Minnesotan registers to vote, doesn't mean the Minnesotan is registered to vote:

Excerpt:

Joshua Reed of St. Louis Park was arrested during a traffic stop for running a stop sign in late September. After determining Reed had no valid licensee, the officer searched his car and found in his trunk 323 voter cards filled out to some degree.

...

Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar said authorities are also investigating evidence that Reed had forged duplicate voter registration cards, which could mean that some people were registered multiple times.

Mr. Reed was working for ACORN.
