I don’t see how Mr.Boucher’s comments were misconstrued.

Mr. Boucher says, “Our views of — our basic views haven’t changed.”

The basic views advocated negotiations.

Russians have decided that these attackes are linked to Shamil Basayev and Asian Maskhadov based on the statements given by four of the hostage-takers according to Izvestia daily.

If you’ll note, the US granted Mr. Maskhadov asylum last month.

So staying the course in this instance does, in fact mean advocating negotiations.

Mr. Putin seems to have gotten the same impression that I did:

“Why don’t you meet Osama bin Laden, invite him to Brussels or to the White House, engage in talks, ask him what he wants and give it to him so he leaves you in peace?”

What have you seen that gives you cause to question the scum’s links to Mr. Maskhadov et al?

But so far the press does not seem to be able to say things half as harsh about some terrorist [excuse me militant] who rapes and kills children. Let’s see what is worse, panties on a man’s head or an 18 month old stabbed to death, a pile of naked men or a mother forced to chose one child to save while the other is shot in the back….let me see… now don’t tell me….

All the Globe did was write about what they think you should know about what the State Department said in the daily briefing. They also mischaracterized what was said, but that fits with the story being pushed that the Beslan murders has something to do with Chechen separatism. But why let me or anyone interpret State’s answers when you can do it yourself:

I think negotiating with responsible Chechens would be good, but not these people. These people are a disgrace to their religion and their culture and what could you negotiate?
