This is why when a democrat politician has an affair, everyone thinks he’s a douche. And when the conservative politcian — who screeches about character — does the same thing, he’s a *hypocrite* as well as a douchebag.

Was Bill Clinton – or any Democrat philanderer, for that matter – walking around saying “Hey, I’m cheating on my wife. Just thought everyone should know so that I can’t be labeled a hypocrite.”?
No? Then what were they doing? Appearing in public, making the same protestations about “the sanctity of marriage” and “the importance of family” and everything else that Republicans say. IOW: “screeching about character” whilst being abject hypocrites.
But when it comes to the way that they’re treated in the US news media, you’re absolutely correct that there’s a difference. The difference is that the Democrat is treated like some tragically flawed Greek hero (“Oh, brave Slick Willy/Teddy The Lion/Client Spitzer, if only thy flesh were match for thy noble heart!”) whilst the Republican is treated like…well…we all get the picture.
The only people who expect other human beings to be perfect are you Leftists…and the only people you expect to be perfect are Republicans.
But it is refreshing for a Leftist such as yourself to implicitly admit that you have no expectations of personal character in your Democratic politicians. Then again, that isn’t exactly a new revelation when it comes to the Left’s views of political power. Again, from Comrade Lenin:

The question then is this: as the Left’s strangehold on the information streams continues to erode…and people become more informed about its history, tactics, goals, and actions…which message will resonate more? Limbaugh’s or Lenin’s?
