I am simply amazed that so many self-styled “true conservatives” can get their panties in a wad over Newt Gingrich’s ethics law problems but they could easily dismiss the ethics law issues that She Who Was Once a Half-term Governor had as a vast left-wing conspiracy. I will guarantee you that I could put anybody who has ever cast a vote in a Legislature, signed a bill, or spent a public dollar in jail if you give me the usual jury of twelve morons with drivers licenses. Whenever anyone who’s been around government more than a day or two hears that Ethics Act charges have been filed against someone, their first question is, “Who did they piss off?” The Democrats and some Republicans have criminalized political disagreement and people are buying into it. I can think of reasons to have grave misgivings about Newt Gingrich and I’ve articulated some of them here, but ethics charges, or even an ethics conviction, aren’t among them. Just as Mel Laird told Richard Nixon about impeachment, with ethics charges, you don’t need evidence, you just need votes.
