My analogy that I have considerd for some time is Easter Island. The islanders built those stone gods by the dozens, for the purpose of protecting them, providing for them, giving them a framework for their lives and world, and protecting their future.

And when it was determined that the stone gods were failing, the Easter Islanders went stark raving mad and toppled them all in an orgy of self-destruction.

Sometimes I wonder about that.
