I work in one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the country. Within a few square miles are Vietnamese, Eritrean, Hmong, Mexican, American blacks, Ethiopian and other communities that I can even think of at the moment. One of my co workers is an Ethiopian immigrant, and a totally amazing person. Not for him the heavily cultivated grievance culture of so many black Americans. When he looks around this country he sees nothing but opportunities on every corner. His brain is on fire with plans, and schemes, and business ideas that he shares with his family, and his church and Ethiopian community that is his cultural base. He is technologically adventurous, and has mastered computer, video, DVD’s, copying and selling CD’s of Ethiopian and african pop music internationally on EBay, and seeking to parlay his profits into real estate investments. Eventually he will become a citizen. He’ll be a damn fine one. One of the best. It’s people like him that keep me optimistic about the future of this country.
