Conservative gloominess is fully justified. The tragedy is that the historian, Niall Ferguson, saw this coming very clearly four years ago in a very prescient op-ed in the Wall St. Journal (8/27/2004), just before the Republican Convention – and no one of note was ready to comprehend the usefulness of historical insights. I am only surprised that Peggy Noonan did not reference his piece.
