And what the “progressives” don’t see- or maybe just don’t want to look at- is that Mexico’s government is openly encouraging, aiding and abetting the illegal immigration.

They have several reasons, most obviously being that as long as they can use the United States as an “escape valve” for their poorest and most discontented populations, the self-styled “hidalgos” who run the country can avoid any reform of their corrupt, kleptocratic pseudo-democracy that would damage their own power, influence, and Swiss bank accounts. (Or do they do their banking in Luxembourg these days?)

There is also the factor that nobody wants to talk about. Namely, radical groups like MechA, the National Council of la Raza, etc., who constantly beat the drum about “reclaiming the Stolen Territories”- by demographics if feasible, by force if necessary (or just because they think it would be fun). To say that nobody seriously believes in this violent pipe-dream overlooks the fact that for the last thirty-plus years, such groups have engaged in “civil disobedience” north of the Rio Grande, while being closely allied with the government south of it. And that their “demands” have grown progressively more extravagant- and divorced from reality- with each passing year.

I would have said that they had no chance of getting what they want (starting with the voiding of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, going on to the “Nation of Aztlan’”, and ending with taking everything west of the Mississippi and south of the Canadian border), but that was before we had an incompetent, radical, and delusional narcissist in the Oval Office.

By the way, if you listen to the recent rhetoric flowing from these groups, and their friends in academia in Mexico and the U.S. both, they are increasingly using the same sort of “talking points” used by the various Palestinian groups against Israel. Which probably explains why their “arguments” are now fashionable amongst the academic elite’. It’s another symptom of the “death to Western Civilization” delusion that afflicts our “best and brightest”- quite possibly the most extensive and persistent mental aberration since the Tulipomania that afflicted England in the 17th century.

As to why the Mexican government would sign on to this, I think they’re smart enough to notice that arguments based on the idea of “oppression of the disadvantaged by the evil Americans, etc.” sells very well with the American news media, as well as our self-styled “enlightened elite’”. If we’re foolish enough to give them such a prybar, they’d have to be crazy not to use it- on us.

For all of the reasons stated above, I don’t see any quick, or rational, resolution of this situation, or of the illegal immigration problem as a whole. Because most of the government officials responsible for creating both are venal, grasping, power-hungry, and corrupt, and most of their facilitators have about as much contact with reality as the average acidhead at Woodstock in 1969.

Or the average member of Hamas, for that matter, which pretty much amounts to the same thing on both counts.
