Further thoughts about immigration, ‘racism,’ and political correctness (a lesson in common sense)
It has been clear for some time that the cry of “racism” would be screamed by the left if ANY serious effort was made to enforce current immigration laws. If it hadn’t been the Arizona law it would have been something else. Border enforcement is (as pointed out here) one of the most obvious symbols of national soverignity. The left has been peddling the notion for forty years that the U.S. is somehow an “illegitimate” state (for reasons of racism, sexism, genderism, country music and a fondness for red meat) and therefore has no right to claim “soverignity” over anything.
We should also recognize the 900 lb. gorilla in the living room – The left sees illegals currently in the country and the Mexicans that would enter the country under “immigration reform” as potential voters and shock troops that will support a radical agenda, particularly in the Southwest. (Sort of a form of ideological cannon fodder.) In effect they are appealing to a foreign nation to help them in their not-so-underground struggle with the United States. The Democrats are nervously trying to keep a foot in each camp – They don’t want to alienate current U.S. voters by pushing for “open borders” but they want to snag the prize of ten to twenty Latino voters if and when “comprehensive immigration reform” (what an Orwellian term) does take place.
