A large part of the reason Obama was elected was voter despair over the prospect of a continuation of the muddled, misbegotten policies of President Bush under John McCain, who was not even willing to run a campaign based on the concerns of his party’s base. (As he’s now doing to save his seat in the AZ primary.) You can’t beat somebody with nobody. Obama was neither Bush nor McCain, and that was enough to put him over the top.
