Here is my pledge to Barack Obama:

I promise, as a freeborn, artistic American, who composes, sings, and paints, that I will never, NEVER take a dime from the NEA from now on, no matter how tempting it may be.

Those of you artists who left comments above saying that you *need* the NEA — I “feel your pain”. I’ve been a part of musical organizations that struggled with funding, and it’s tough. But seriously, I hope you’re joking!

Art will find a way to survive without the NEA, because people need beauty, and art is stronger than government servitude. If you don’t believe that, why are you artists?
