If there is a silver lining here it's this. Conservative principles are achieve in two ways: first in debate or in elucidating ideas in media. Second is in the implications of our lost freedoms through social programs that even the apolitical cannot tolerate. The health care proposal is propelling the latter. If the left rams this through the goal here must be to do away with the maxim that once in place, socialism is here to stay. If the left could do away with free markets why do we accept that we can't do the same with policies that shackle freedom?

Dear Mr Kimball,

You make a salient observation that Eric Hoffer is also very influential in the grass roots conservative movement. I was there. Hoffer was a contemporary of Ayn Rand. All who read her works for political guidance also read and discussed "The True Believer". It served as the Yin to Rand's Yang. It gave real world reinforcement to the admittedly "science fantasy" nature of her novels.

Regards,
Roy

The Left's hatred of Sarah Palin has been rightly called by Andrew Breitbart (?) "Bush-Derangement-Syndrome-by-Proxy."

The Left NEEDS a focus for their hate; they NEED someone to whom they can feel superior, even if they aren't. They are morally, intellectually, and even emotionally bankrupt, and they know it.

"The combination of fury and contempt Governor Palin elicits is something I am not sure I fully understand. Snobbery plays a role, I am sure, but there are other, hard-to-fathom forces at work, too. It is less what she says, I believe, than what she is."

A softball right over the plate from a pitcher who's lost his juice. But I'm not gonna swing; it's just too sad.

Thanks, Roger. If you want a taste of liberal imperialism in action, check the current boycott of WholeFoods by libs reacting to the WF CEO's sensible editorial on Obamacare in WSJ. Yup, they want to put thousands of WF's highly diverse labor force out of work. Now, that's reasoned debate! Freedom of speech! The new, open society!
