It seems Mary Jackson has pegged it. I remember some hoopla over his use of words from old minstrel shows. Part of Johnson’s appeal is his flirtation with Urban Liberal folkways, like riding a bicycle to work, and claiming environmental issues as Tory issues. That and, there is no good reason for him to endorse McCain. I’m sure London sees McCain as only one step removed from unadulterated evil. I can’t see him as one of those anti-American tories. After all, he wrote this:
“They tell me some Americans want to call them ”freedom fries.” Donnez-moi un break. The word is chips. Let’s agree on chips, folks, because when the chips are down, Britain is going to stick with America.”

Maybe I’m missing something, but to me that sounds an awful lot like “He’s a credit to his race.”

A simple, sincere expression of hope from Boris ?

No. Me neither.

Maybe Boris really is “racist” and well as being perceived as “racist”. Maybe at the end of Boris’ endorsement we are meant to hear an unspoken, “…and only black people”.

Certainly, as reported in the Telegraph the only thing Boris has to say about Obama is that he is black and good for black people. The man is obsessed.

At the risk of sounding cynical, I suspect Boris wants to curry favour with what lefties call “the black community” at home. Because of a few politcally incorrect jokes, Boris was perceived as “racist” – he is, of course, nothing of the kind – and endorsing Obama is a costless way for him to prove he isn’t to those yet unconvinced. (Red Ken was the real racist, but Jew-hatred – sorry, “anti-Zionism” – doesn’t count.)
