Dear Rog:

Excellent, and as per usual you and your empirical clarity, wit and talented smarts is unknown in Australia. Nope, we mostly like the inherent mediocrity of Leftard groupthink in Oz, according to those in charge of the media etc. Great stuff, Mr Kimball.

A crucial difference between Gore's and TK's manifesto is that TK's manifesto, while misguided in certain respects, is nevertheless brilliant.

I suppose arguing with a religious zealot is pointless. But I'll offer some facts.

1. Neolithic man hunted North America's mega-fauna to extinction. Today wildlife is more abundant than ever due to wildlife management.

2. Medieval man deforested Europe. Today reclamation of the environment is the law following any type of resource extraction. New England has more trees today than in 1776.

3. Two-hundred years ago people dumped excrement in the street. Today we have sanitation and clean water.

4. Factory smoke during the 19th Century literally turned cities black. Air quality today has been vastly improved through technology (like the catalytic converter).

5. The staple diet of Native Americans in the southwest was based on beans, corn, and squash. Today residents of the region can purchase fresh seafood.

6. Life through most of human history was "short, nasty, and brutish." Modernity has made life long, abundant, and comfortable.

I could give a hundred examples of how capitalism and technology have improved our lives. But like everything else in the Church of Environmentalism, the belief system is based on a myth. Utopia is a state of pristine nature. Well, it never existed and never will. The answer to environmental problems is more and better technology. Al Gore needs to start wearing clerical garb. He did attend divinity school, did he not? It's all starting to fit.
