My current favorite candidate is &amp;#8220;libertarian paternalism.&amp;#8221; That&amp;#8217;s the phrase that Richard H. Thaler and Cass Sunstein promulgate as an alternative to socialism in their new book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness. Of course, they don&amp;#8217;t say their form of paternalism is a synonym for &amp;#8220;socialism.&amp;#8221; And they naturally rebel at the idea that the phrase &amp;#8220;libertarian paternalism&amp;#8221; is a contradiction in terms.
